So, you are trying to make your eyes look bigger and brighter with make-up – yet, you have somehow managed to make them look tired and teeny tiny. Not on purpose, of course. You stepped back too late to look at the final result; you thought eyeliner was supposed to make your eyes pop and look beautifully doe-eyed, but it ended up making your eyes look smaller. Look out for these seven make-up mistakes that will put things in perspective and have you better prepared for your next application.

Lining your waterline with black eyeliner

Does eyeliner make eyes look smaller? Yes and no, rimming your eyes in inky black colour does. It can also make your eyes look piercing which is why it is appealing. But on the other hand, it is going to make them look squinty – especially if your eyes are already smaller. Instead, make your eyes look wide-awake with a white or peach-coloured liner. A light colour opens them up, making them look rounder and larger. If you want to use black, don’t line the inner rims of your eyes. Draw a light line right above the lashes, working the product into the lash line.

Skipping mascara if your lashes are sparse

Sadly, we aren’t all blessed with naturally lush lashes. If yours are a little on the short or sparse side (or both), your mistake is simply not coating those lashes in lengthening mascara. A couple coats of this magical stuff and your peepers will instantly look much bigger.

Wearing too many false lashes

This almost seems impossible, right? But if you are a• faux lash queen, going overboard with the extensions or stacking strips can make your lids appear heavy. It can also just look plain silly if it is overdone. If stepping out without falsies is not an option, opt for a natural, wispy set for that bright-eyed, baby doll look, without the weight! You can even use single eyelashes for a customised look.

Not curling your eyelashes

So, you might never forget to apply mascara, but did you curl your lashes first? If not, you are missing out on statement eyes! You need to prep your eyelashes with a good curl before every mascara application. This really opens up the eyes.

Applying the wrong smoky eye for your eye shape

Landing the perfect smoky eye takes much skill, practice and an endless amount of patience. Now, perfecting one that’s specific to your eye shape – That is a whole other level of expertise! For some eye shapes (like hooded or deep set), applying dark shadow all over can actually accentuate your top lid and make it look sunken or heavy, which is obviously not the best look. The right smoky eye should make your eyes look big, bold and dramatic. Need help? Check various smoky eye tutorials to see which one’s best for you.

Applying the wrong eyeliner look for your eye shape

The way you apply your eyeliner is just as important for your eye shape as a smoky eye. Too thick, and your eyes can look smaller. Wing out too long, or line all around your eye, and they can look smaller. You want your eyeliner to lift and open up the eyes. Go through different ways of applying eye liners to make a better decision.

Not wearing concealer when you have dark circles

Lack of sleep can take attention away from our beautiful eyes and shift the focus onto our dark under eye circles and eyelids instead. Darkness around your eyes detracts from the size of your eyes. Luckily, the solution is a simple one. An effective concealer will instantly brighten up your eye area and fade dark circles for a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed look. It will also lift your whole face up and open up the eye area.

Here are some things that you can do to further help your eyes open up and look bright.

1. Dust the entire eyelid with a light/shimmery shadow.

2. Line the waterline with a cream-colored eyeliner (waterproof is works better on the waterline).

3. Apply two to four individual lashes on the outer lash line of each eye.

4. Use an angled brush to line the lower lash line. To get a “big eye” effect, apply the line just slightly (about one millimeter) below the lash line.

5. Brush waterproof mascara on the tips of the lower lashes.

6. Apply a volumising mascara on top lashes, using a zig-zag motion as you pull the wand upward and away from your lashes.
