A woman in China volunteered for a dental surgery to be performed by a robot. The procedure involved an autonomous robot arm which was implanted to two 3D printed teeth in the woman’s mouth.

According to dentists in China, this innovation could widely advance the country’s lack of dentists currently, as well as surgical errors. The robot is said to have been developed by the robot institute at Beihang University in Beijing and the Fourth Military Medical University’s affiliated Stomatological Hospital, based in Xian.

Two human medical staff members were present to monitor the one-hour operation which took place in Xian, Shaanxi, but they didn’t assist, allowing the robot to carry out the entire surgery.

Before the surgery, position oriented equipment was fitted to the patient, the robot assessed the patient’s skull and jaw using a CT scanner, researchers then uploaded all the necessary information into the device to complete the procedure using a special marking system.
