At the heart of Souk at Fes el Bali in Morocco are these shops where I tried playing some of the Andalusian musical instruments. One of the craftsman explained that traditional Andalusian-Moroccan music comprised of five essential artistes and ensembles. They play bendir, round drum, the ‘derbouka’ and ‘taarejas’, as well as the famous ‘djembe’, clay or ceramic tam-tams, the oud, the Moroccan lyre, the ‘guembri’ a kind of guitar, the ‘duf’, a square skin-covered drum from Zagoura. The wooden flute known as the ‘anay’ is the most widely used musical instrument in Morocco.
