Six nifty ways to get more out of your eye make-up
Start With An Eye Primer
Eye primer prevents make-up from settling into fine lines and wrinkles as it acts as a barrier between your skin and make-up. As a result, your eye area is smoothed out, preventing creases, reducing oil, and helping eyeshadow glide on with ease. Eye primer also conceals the capillaries on your eyelids, providing the perfect, neutral base for your eyeshadow to show its true colour.
Avoid Shimmery Formulas
Frosted eyeshadow formulas are one of the biggest make-up mishaps. For women who are ageing, using shimmer is a big mistake. It makes eyelids look puffy and scaly, and it enhances lines. Rather than shimmer-based formulas, look for matte options in your favourite colour. If you are not quite ready to give up the sparkly finish, apply creamy white metallic shades to the inner corners of your eyes, and leave the darker colours for the outer edges. This widens your eyes and imparts a more youthful appearance.
Draw Attention To All The Right Places
If you have droopy eyelids, draw attention to your eyes rather than your eyelids. One simple way to do this is to start your eyeliner just above your pupil rather than at the inner corner of your eye, before taking it to the outer edges. Keep the pencil as close to your lash line as possible.
Once you have finished, grab a cotton bud (or the end of your eyeliner pencil) and smudge the product gently in an upwards motion to give your eyes a lifted look. If your lashes need a boost, look for a formula that lengthens and adds volume, or try a lash growth enhancer to add protein to your lashes and help them grow longer, thicker and stronger.
Take Care Of The Areas Above & Below Your Eyes, Too!
There's little point spending time perfecting your eye make-up, only to have your brows ruin all the fun. The same can be said for not concealing dark circles and puffiness. Fuller, well-groomed brows that suit your face shape will instantly take years off your look. Brow-shaping plays an important role in your beauty routine as you age. The right shape and thickness exudes youth and confidence. Pay attention to the way you use your brow products to camouflage brow imperfections, making sure you use a slightly lighter colour to avoid being heavy-handed. Brow mascara is great for touching up grey brow hairs as well. Once you have mastered your brows, invest in a highlighting pen and concealer to enhance the area under your eyes as well.
Choose A Colour Palette That Suits Your Eyes
Wearing the right shade of eye shadow and liner will instantly brighten your eyes, but the key is deciding whether you want to intensify or complement your eye colour. As a general rule:
Blue Eyes: Should stick to shades of blue and green to complement, or brown, bronze, apricot and even light pin to intensify.
Brown Eyes: Stick to browns or earthy tones to complement, and dark blues or green to intensify.
Green & Hazel Eyes: Women should wear green shades to complement, and purple or earthy-pink shades to intensify.
But if all else fails, remember that grey, navy and deep burgundy are all neutral shades, so they suit all eye colours.
Work With Your Glasses, Not Against Them!
When choosing frames, it's important to think about whether they suit your face shape, as well as your style. Frames can enlarge or shrink your ryes. So keep that in mind as you may want to enlarge your eyes by applying mascara on your top and bottom lashes, or using a white pencil in the inner rim of your eyes.
Again, avoid using shimmery eyeshadow formulas as your lenses will enhance the negative effect it has on fine lines, and buy a magnifying mirror with natural light to help with make-up application in poorly lit areas. Remember to always remove your eye make-up before bed.
