Travel Amersfoort
by HAMZA
Amersfoort is one of Netherlands best kept secrets. It's a cute little town some half hour by train from Amsterdam, and only 10 minutes from Utrecht. Amersfoort has a nice historic centre, where the network of streets and canals is much like it was in the Middle Ages. Compared to Amsterdam the canals are small, quiet and intimate, and bordered by some lovely gardens. A single big Tower (Tall John) standing on the market square is the real focal point of the city. The Joriskerk On The Hof church is worth a visit as well. Amersfoort is actually one of the few Dutch cities that has nice squares and these are best enjoyed during the Amersfoort Jazz Festival when there are bands playing in all of the medieval centre. On the outer ring of canals around the old city you'll find the area of Muurhuizen, with very nice mansions and old monasteries. You could take a stroll down the area or visit the nearby castle and local museums for some historical insight. Important historical sights include the Lieve Vrouwe tower and the Koppelpoort; the former with its 98 meter height, it is the second highest tower in the Netherlands. There are regular tours during the summer months where you can discover everything about the history and legends surrounding the tower. You can climb the 364 steps on a guided tour, from July to mid-September. The Koppelpoort – is probably the best preserved city gate in the country, with a dual water and road entrance, built over the River Eem.
