High Cholesterol Problem
Q: My husband has a high cholesterol problem with HDL 43 mg/dl and LDL 203 mg/dl. He has also been taking proper High Cholesterol Problemmedication for it. Could you please tell me what be his diet should consist of? Rizwana Latif

You should have also mentioned about serum cholesterol value and your husband's weight. If he is overweight then he needs to lose weight. Losing excess weight will help in bringing down the raised cholesterol levels. Exercise is also very important for him. Bring some changes in his eating habits; replace full cream milk with skimmed milk. Increase his intake of fruits and vegetables. Cut down saturated fats completely from his diet. You will have to convince him to change his lifestyle and his dietary habits. Completely omit white food items like white rice, white sugar, white flour and white bread from his diet.

You have to reduce atleast 15kg. You can get quick results with exercise and regular brisk walk. Since summer has just begun, utilise fruits to make refreshing smoothies to keep your body well hydrated. Use honey instead of sugar in your drinks. Avoid fried items. Instead of having a full meal for lunch, have a vegetable salad instead. You can make it appetising with flavouring yogurt and honey. You can also have clear soups for lunch and dinner. Have a glass of milk once a day to get the required calcium. Consume white meat in grilled, steamed or baked forms.

A diet rich in proteins, iron and zinc is very good for hair. Several popular treatments including protein treatment is available claiming good hair growth. It is better to include protein in diet rather than going for spa treatments. For dandruff apply a mixture of egg and yogurt twice a week on your scalp and rinse it with a good shampoo. To tackle hair fall, consume vegetables and fruits. Fish is also good for hair.

The weight loss target for you is 20kg. You are gaining weight as you have reached menopause. Make an aim to reach 70kg by the end of this year with controlled diet and exercise. Make some permanent changes in your lifestyle for your good health. With age a person's metabolic rate slows down resulting in weight gain. High intensity exercises can help in boosting up metabolism. Do three sets of 20 sit-ups in morning, afternoon and in evening. Get your vitamin D and calcium levels checked and in case of any deficiencies consult a physician for proper medical prescription. Your diet should be rich in calcium and have five to six small meals. Keep yourself hydrated in this hot season with the intake of water and juices.

Get your hormonal tests done to figure out the exact cause of your obesity. Avoid junk food, sugary items and white carbohydrates. Prefer home made food items and try to make snacks at home. Excessive intake of chocolates, cold drinks, pizzas, burgers and fried items lead to nothing but weight gain. For height gain, engage yourself in sports or do hanging exercises. Swimming is also found helpful in gaining height.

Weight lifting exercises are also good for you. Include lean protein in your diet as it helps in muscles building. Start your day with a heavy breakfast and have atleast four other meals during the rest of the day.
