How We Waste £2.4Bn Each Year On Our Mobile Phones
Mobile phone customers are throwing £2.4billion a year 'down the drain' by paying for minutes and texts they don't use.
About 17 million pay-monthly users are buying too much call time, while 18 million overspend on texts, researchers have found.
Most would be better off if they switched to another package or company, but four in ten have never changed their provider. Laziness is one of the main reasons for the wasted cash, with four in ten users saying they simply cannot be bothered to transfer to a better deal.
That is despite average savings for those who do switch off more than £11 every month - or £273 over the course of a two-year contract according to the survey of more than 2,000 users.
Ernest Doku, of uSwitch.com said: 'Paying for minutes and texts that you don't use is like buying food you don't eat - it's a waste of money.
Try speaking to your provider about adjusting the deal you're on as you could be throwing money down the drain.'
Almost half of mobile customers use just 50 per cent of their monthly allowance of minutes and texts, while a fifth use less than 20 per cent of their allotted call time.
But those customers who do try to change provider say they would like to see the process made much easier.
