Travel Genoa
by HAMZA
Genoa was founded before the Romans and was very important in ancient times as it was one of the Sea Republics to rule navigation along all known seas around 1100-1300. It is the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, and part of his living home still remains in the centre of the town. An important town in the Ligurian/Italian Riviera, it is a well-renowned holiday resort famous all over Europe. Coming in from the Ligurian area, the town is really worth a visit as many ancient Renaissance buildings, famous museums and good restaurants are all within easy reach. The Old Town is the biggest in Europe and one of the best preserved old cities in the world. Great palaces, property of the ancient powerful Genoa families are now museums open to the public. The heart of the old city is made up of an incredible number of tiny streets and alleys called Caruggi. Walking through it will pump you right back in ancient times when Genoa was the most important harbour of the Mediterranean Sea. Locals will say driving around the city is somewhat faster than public transportation, but once you have reached your destination you are faced with the nightmare and frustration of looking for a nonexistent parking spot. It is not just chance that most locals switched from cars to scooters – to the extent that even finding a spot for a scooter has become too difficult. All attractions within the centre are in walking distance or well served by public transportation, therefore a car is of no use at all. Important sights include the natal house of Cristoforo Colombo and the impressive fortification belt built on the hills surrounding the city, originating in the 16th Century.
