The Way They Were
Like every year, 2011 left us with its share of memories. Some sweet, some sour. But each one of them made the year what it was, unique. If some became proud parents, others gave birth to blockbusters on screen. If some went West in the hope of recognition, others achieved notoriety at home. Truly, the year gone by was a mixed bag. Records were broken, outstanding work was done, dubious distinctions achieved. Here's a look at all those who stood out and grabbed headlines last year…
Anil Kapoor
Anil Kapoor
He did the television series 24 in Hollywood and everyone murmured their appreciation. Then came news that he'd been signed on for Mission Impossible 4 and everyone back home sat up and exulted in his victory. Anil Kapoor has finally done what most actors, who'd crossed over failed at. He'd signed an A grade film which starred Tom Cruise. He spoke and spoke about the film throughout the year. That you blinked and missed him in the movie is another story altogether. Okay, you have to hand it to him for getting Tom Cruise to India. When Imtiaz Aliwas the last time a Hollywood star came visiting India to promote his film? Some achievement that.

Imtiaz Ali
Faith is believing in something when common sense tells you not to. That is what drove Imtiaz Ali to give us Rockstar. It was his faith in love and poet Rumi that made him take a step further. Along with good friend Anurag Kashyap, Imtiaz had tweeps revisit the film. He even sat down on the stairs of a suburban theatre and discussed the film with them till the wee hours. Only a man of faith can inspire a great divide between the audience. Some loved it, most Madhuri Dixithated it but everyone talked about it.

Madhuri Dixit
It was a void hard to fill after she tied the knot and left the country. Filmmakers got nostalgic about her, so did movie lovers. Madhuri Dixit herself got nostalgic. The industry clamoured for her each time she came for a visit. After being away for nearly a decade, the actress realised she missed her home country a wee bit too much. So last year, she packed her bags and relocated to India. Siram Nene got himself a job in the counry, Madhuri scouted for schools or her kids. Film wallahs flooded her Lara Dutta–Mahesh Bhupathiwith movie offers. And everyone lived happily after.

Lara Dutta–Mahesh Bhupathi
Lara Dutta and Mahesh Bhupathi made their first official public appearance at the Filmfare Awards year before last. Last year they tied the knot in Goa in a private ceremony attended by just family and friends. A few months later the couple confirmed on a social networking site that Lara was in the family way. In the meanwhile, Lara also launched her production house Bheegi Basanti Productions and made her debut as a producer with Challo Dilli, a sweet film which didn't get its due. Mahesh Bhupathi too jumped into the fray by launching Big Daddy Productions. And so life continued Ajay Devgnmerrily for the young couple.

Ajay Devgn
Singham was a slap on all those faces who've dismissed Ajay Devgn as a light weight amongst A grade stars. The movie became one of the biggest blockbusters of last year. And Ajay Devgn's brooding eyes ruled the marquee. He passed muster in Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji. Yeah the actor had a dud like Rascals too. But frankly that didn't matter in the final outcome. Priyanka Chopra–ShahidThe dark horse had finally got the winning combination.

Priyanka Chopra–Shahid

The gossipmongers had been going on about their relationship for a while. But the two continued to deny it. And then the IT department raided Priyanka's home at 7.30 in the morning. And guess who opened the door wearing shorts? You're right. Shahid Kapoor. Their relationship went through a rollercoaster through the year. The now on, now off relationship must have finally got to them. And they apparently called it off. Sigh!
Imran Khan
Imran Khan
Those who had dismissed him off as a one film wonder can think again. The actor ruled the box office this year with two superhits. The idiosyncratic Delhi Belly and the regular romcom Mere Brother Ki Dulhan cemented his position on showbiz terra firms. The actor tied the knot with his long-standing sweetheart Avantika Malik early this year. That grabbed him the headlines. Also he was pitted as Ranbir Salman KhanKapoor's rival in the media. The two however brushed aside those reports and maintained a healthy friendship.

Salman Khan

It's truly difficult to explain the Salman Khan phenomenon. His movies have no story, screenplay or production values. They may seem frayed at the seams, fraught with continuity glitches. But do movie lovers care? If it's Salman Khan's then it's watchable. That's the nation's mantra. And his fans throng the theatres in droves. Bodyguard with all its flaws garnered a whopping Indian rupee 100 crore at the box office. Ready had the producers laughing to the bank. Salman Khan carried on relentlessly this year too. He grabbed headlines when he went under the surgeon's knife for a rare ailment. But all's well that ends well.
