The plot thickens with every passing day as the war of words between Faryal Makhdoom, wife of famed boxing superstar, Amir Khan and his family escalates. The latest in this series of public spats has been a responsible statement by Amir, who thanked his mother-in-law for her support during this troubling time. In a public statement Khan said, “A snap with Faryals mum in Washington after my charity dinner event. Big thanks to her for all her support and help. Esp with Lamaisah.”
Lamaisah Khan, the two-year-old daughter of the celebrity couple, was with her maternal grandparents during the couple’s recent trip in North America for charity events. This may settle down the brouhaha, and we hope it does.
But it’s been over three weeks that the family feud started, and as the ruckus spilled over social media, the press clamoured for more.
It all started when Faryal made shocking allegations in a series of 10 messages on Snapchat about being bullied by her in-laws. She accused her mother-in-law, Falak Khan of instigating her son, Amir to divorce her, and also alleged that her sister-in-law attempted to hit her while Amir wasn’t home. She termed the family’s treatment of her ‘disgusting’.
Her tirade against her in-laws began with the post: “Don’t get your sons married if you’re going to abuse and bully the wife. I’ve always been so quiet but seriously
this message is for everyone! When you bring someone’s daughter – treat her as your own. Your son will be much happier & so will you”.
The 25-year-old, US-born model married Amir in 2013. The two, along with Lamaisah, live in Bolton, England with the boxer’s family.
It all started with a picture posted online back in April, in which Faryal is pouting with her new hair colour. While she made no reference to her dressing in the post, she asked her followers what they thought of her hair colour. Irrespective of what she intended, the photograph caused a furor in the Khan household.
Faryal eventually made the fallout between her and her in-laws public in a lengthy social media post, accusing them of abuse.
The boxer’s parents slammed the allegations, but revealed that the discord began when they asked her to change her dressing style. The star boxer’s father, Shah Khan denied these allegations, but admitted tensions over her sense of dressing, which he said was “not acceptable”.
“My parents are my parents and my wife is my wife. Whatever misunderstanding has happened they should keep it private. This is getting to the point where they will lose a son and a husband. Both parties need to stop this. I've had enough.”
Speaking about the rift to a media outlet, Shah said that his daughter-in-law was adopting a dress code which was unacceptable according to Islam.
“I am a father to two daughters, whom I have treated exactly the same way as I have treated Faryal. All this started with the issue of dressing. We kept asking Amir to tell her not to adopt such a dress code. And even if she had to wear such dresses, please don’t post it on social media.”
But Faryal claimed that she was subjected to verbal and physical abuse by her in-laws, something that was categorically denied by the latter. Amidst all this chaos, there was a brief instance of sanity when Amir, himself broke the silence. “I apologise for the silly picture and message my wife Faryal put up. Here is me working my ass off helping the less fortunate with charity dinners and my family and wife are just destroying my good name. I didn’t want to get involved in this mess. There is NO reality television show,” he said soon after Faryal had posted a controversial picture of her brother-in-law, implying her in-laws’ hypocrisy in objecting to her ways.
He further said, “My parents are my parents and my wife is my wife. Whatever misunderstanding has happened they should keep it private. This is getting to the point where they will lose a son and a husband. Childish behaviour. Both parties need to stop this. I've had enough.”
This was followed by a momentary apology by Faryal, who posted, “I wanted to apologise for the picture I put out earlier. I was a bit angry and felt like I needed to justify myself.”
However undeterred, Faryal again made damning incendiary remarks, alleging that she was tormented by Amir’s brother, Haroon. As the family saga continues, social media outbursts are inevitable from both sides, but this family feud has seriously dented the relationship between the two. Will they stay together? Only time will tell.
The picture that started it all!
This photograph initiated the family feud between Amir Khan’s wife, Faryal Makhdoom and his family. She posted the photo over eight months ago, in April on her Instagram account. In the caption she asks her followers to comment on her new hair colour.
