OBITUARY
Remembering Pir Pagara (by AMBREEN ASIM)
Pir Pagara
Tall and handsome, a man who was loved by thousands and thousands of his followers, the spiritual leader of Hurs, Pir Sain Pagara, is no more among us, but will remain alive in people's hearts for the years to come. He was generous and a very humble human being. It is said that his followers used to travel miles and miles barefoot only to have a glimpse of him.
I had heard a lot about Pir Sahib Pagara and wanted to witness the respect he used to enjoy. Then I got the honour of interviewing him with the help of Pir Sahib's friend Ariful Haque Arif in September 2011, four months before his sad demise. It was his last exclusive interview to print media. At the age of 83, he was so full of life that I could not have imagined that he would leave us so early. I was shocked to hear about the death of Pir Sain Pagara more than any other ordinary Pakistani because I was amongst a limited number of people who had interviewed him. Wearing a spotless off-white dress called 'chogha' and a pendant with some Quranic verse embossed on it, the aura of his grand personality had made me speechless for a moment when I first saw him. But when I started talking to him I found him very amicable and humble in nature.
Pir Sain Pagara, without any doubt, was a godfather to many politicians of the country and I am right in saying that his sudden departure has left many on the political front in quandary as his guidance was indispensable to lead a successful political life. Even his political rivals were among his admirers.
Pir PagaraWhen I sat down to interview him, he lit his cigarette and started shedding light on the country's political affairs. He was of the view that army would come in power soon, and PPP would disintegrate one day for the party was no longer associated with Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. During the interview he also disclosed General Zia-u-Haq's statement regarding the engagement of Zardari with Benazir Bhutto, who had said, "I have become successful today. Zardari would do what I could not." It was about the disintegration of PPP, and Pir Sahib while narrating this added, "Zardari is doing the same now." He had also said that only middle class could bring a revolution in Pakistan.
It is sad that a veteran politician is no longer with us today. My heartfelt condolences to his family and the Hur community.
President PML(F) District Sanghar, Faqir Mohammad Ismail Mahar was among the devoted followers of Pir Pagara. While sharing his views about his leader, he says, "Pir Sahib was a symbol to country's prosperity. There was no other politician who could stand tall in the Pir Pagara housepresence of Pir Sahib as he was an experienced and veteran politician. He not only talked about the local affairs but also had command over international affairs and he used to analyse them according to their past, present and future perspectives. He was a spiritual healer and had treated many people with untreatable diseases."
"He was a very punctual man. It was his routine to come to Kingri House at 9 a.m. sharp daily. I used to meet him very often and learnt a lot from him. Pir Pagara was known for his wisdom and could solve even the most complex issues in minutes. In every meeting, he used to stress upon fulfilling the rights of neighbours and leading lives according to the principles of Islam. He was very concerned about the safety and security of the country and had advised to work in liaison with Pakistan Army and to join Hur Mujahid force."
"Pir Sahib loved hunting. There were specific hunting places allocated for him in Sanghar and its adjacent areas, where no one else was allowed to hunt other than him. He loved to hunt grey francolin. His favourite channel was National Geographic and he once said, 'I like snow covered mountains and love to travel to places where I am not recognised'."
