Mum's The World
Here are some of T'town's most famous mother and child bonds
Ask any of our T'towners who the most influential person in their life is and chances are, the first word they will blurt out is 'mummy'. Some Bollywood mums are bigger (in persona and influence) than their glamourous wards and often we see their children impersonating them – in deeds, if not in looks! Here are some stars who share a very special bond with their mothers and often end up being mirror images of them.
Poonam & Sonakshi Sinha
Poonam & Sonakshi Sinha
The Disciplinarian Mum
Points of similarity: Obedience and conformity.
Why they share a close bond: Shatrughan's temper is famous so it was not surprising that Sonakshi confided in her mother when she wanted to be an actress. It was disciplinarian Poonam who kept nagging Sona about her weight and motivated her to shape up. Whether accompanying her to shoots or events, Poonam has a protective eye on her daughter, who clearly adores her.
Karan & Hiroo Johar
Karan & Hiroo Johar
The Best Friends Mum
Points of similarity: Being everyone's friend in need.
Why the share a close bond: In Bollywood, everyone loves them – from actor, actresses, star-wives to designers and filmmakers! They are indeed the Mr and Ms Congeniality of a notoriously–fickle industry. Karan's dad, Yash Johar, who had been battling cancer for a while, passed away a few years ago. Karan, the only son, was his mother's steadfast support through the difficult phase; they have been each other's solace through trying times and are practically extensions of one another. Karan lives with his mum and considers her his true confidant.
Neetu & Ranbir Kapoor
Neetu & Ranbir Kapoor
The Super Mum
Points of similarity:
Patience, good behaviour and charm.
Why they share a close bond: Getting married at an early age of 21 after giving up a flourishing career in Bollywood, Neetu Singh made the ultimate sacrifice for her family. Unlike dad Rishi Kapoor who has his mood swings and is known to be difficult, Ranbir is respectful, charming and very well-behaved. He loves his mum and she too has been a supporter of his many affairs. Ranbir has often said that during his school days, he would run to his mum every time he got a bad grade in an examination or pulled off some prank or the other!
Babita & Karisma & Kareena Kapoor
Babita & Karisma & Kareena Kapoor
The Filmy Mum
Points of similarity:
Ambition, drive and determination.
Why they share a close bond: It's well known that Babita brought up her daughters single-handedly after her separation from Randhir Kapoor. Babita always harboured big dreams for her daughters. She is responsible for making Karisma and Kareena what they are today – beautiful, focused and determined actresses. In the Kapoor khandaan, women entering films were frowned upon but Babita ensured Karisma broke the rule. She is known to be a tough negotiator and it's said, she decided her daughters' films in the initial part of their careers. Kareena was supposed to make her debut with Hrithik in Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai but Babita decided Refugee with Abhishek and made Bebo walk out of the former. Even today, the Kapoor girls say they owe it all to their mum.
Hema Malini & Esha Deol
Hema Malini & Esha Deol
The Beautiful Mum
Points of similarity:
Looks, looks and looks.
Why they share a close bond: When Esha debuted as a gawky teenager in Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe, audiences were startled by her similarity to the dream girl – the same doe eyes, shy smile and sharp chin. Unfortunately, the similarities were limited only to the genetics. Esha could never match her mum's on-screen success though Hema is the controlling factor in her life. It's a treat to watch them dance on stage together. Hema even made a film (Tell Me O Kkhuda) to resurrect Esha's failing career. All through her growing up years, Esha has lived with Hema and the young's Ms Deol admits that matters of the heart are easier to discuss with mummy. When she decided to become an actress, it was Hema who broached the subject with strict dad Dharmendra, who didn't want his daughters to do films.
Sunanda & Shilpa Shetty
Sunanda & Shilpa Shetty
The Fortune Teller Mum
Points of similarity:
Their quiet inner strength.
Why they share a close bond: Shilpa's world revolves around her mother, Sunanda, who has even appeared on shows with her daughter. It was she who encouraged Shilpa to enter films. Thanks to her skills in tarot and astrology, Sunanda has been able to guide her daughter well.
Be it the decision to enter the Big Brother house in UK or getting married to Raj, Shilpa always runs to her mother for guidance as Sunanda is reputedly made of steel. Now we know how Shilpa learnt the art of patience and calm in the face of life's adversities!
Jaya & Abhishek Bachchan
Jaya & Abhishek Bachchan
The Optimistic Mum
Points of similarity:
An easygoing attitude towards everything.
Why they share a close bond: The Big B's baby is far closer to his mother. During his childhood, when the Big B was larger than life, Jaya took complete control of the home front and her children. Mama's boy Abhishek relies on her for emotional support to this day. In terms of looks too, though he has got Big B's height and baritone, he looks more like his mum. Jaya, despite being a brilliant actress, was never Abhishek. He does his job well and doesn't bother about the results. His mother, whispers insist, had a role to play in his affairs as well – be it his break-up with Karisma or his marriage with Ash.
