My daughter is two years old and she gets nosebleeds. Her nose bleeds so much that it even drips on her shirt. What is the reason and what should I do when it happens? Samra

Nosebleeds are most frequently caused by trauma to the nose, repeated nose picking, allergies, colds or other infections. Whenever it happens, pull the head up and press and squeeze the nose with ice in a handkerchief for 5 minutes.
Prophylactically, use petroleum jelly daily, three times inside the nose to keep
it wet.
If this does not work, then your child needs to consult an ENT surgeon. He will cauterise (seal) the exposed blood vessels that constantly break.

It seems like this is the season of diarrhoea. Many children I have heard are suffering from it which is also accompanied by vomiting. Would you please guide me on how can I prevent my child for having it and if he gets it, what should I do? Amna Khalid

Many stomach and intestinal infections can cause vomiting with diarrhoea. The medical term that encompasses these is acute gastro-enteritis. The condition is also called stomach flu or intestinal flu indicating a contagious disease, caused by an unknown virus or bacteria. It is often passed through several members of the family one after the other. The important thing is that it dehydrates the child. He may experience weight loss and lethargy. Give oral rehydraion salts after every stool and vomit. If they get severe, consult the paediatrician immediately.
