Recently, the sporty girl, got engaged at a simple yet colourful ceremony in Hyderabad.
It was a match point with a difference, but tennis star Sania Mirza handled it with her usual aplomb. The 22-year-old was formally engaged to Hyderabadi businessman Mohammed Sohrab Mirza on July 10.
In an exclusive, by-invitation only function at a Hyderabad luxury hotel, the evening’s celebrations were kicked off with a ceremonial exchange of rings. Sania hadn’t seen her ring, a glittering solitaire, reportedly worth Rs 10 lakh, until the moment Mohammed placed it on her ring finger. Moments later, her eyes reflected its shine and sparkle.
Sania was dressed in a dazzling ornate green ghagra-choli, designed by Delhi-based designer brothers Nikhil and Shantanu Mehra, snugly fit at her lower body and gaining in flare around the ankles. Sania had picked the colours for the occasion - emerald green and gold - much in advance.
“We’ve had this choker in our family for 75 years, emerald set in dull gold. It is my mother’s. Before her, it was my dadi’s and I wanted to wear it,” Sania said.
The assignment went to Delhi-based Shantanu, who had on a previous occasion attired Sania for an award ceremony, and he responded with an intricately embroidered three-piece ensemble.
The blouse, a mix of the East and West, done in a corset design, was complemented by a netted dupatta, which Sania fetchingly draped over her head.
The Taj Krishna hotel turned into a fortress when Indian tennis’s poster girl, got engaged.
Giving scores of journalists and TV crews the slip, Sania entered the hotel through the service entrance.
The excitement was palpable outside the Mirzas’ Jubilee Hills residence. A little after 4 p.m., Sania, clad in jeans and T-shirt, was driven out in a gleaming new green car bearing the lucky number 786.
Sources said that Sania visited a dargah en route the engagement venue - the hotel that has been sponsoring the tennis champ since her childhood.
Although the engagement was strictly off-bounds for the media, the paparazzi got a sneak peek into the select gathering. Spotted at the do was Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeswari, and of course, Sania’s mixed doubles partner and fellow Hyderabadi Mahesh Bhupathi.
