Kitchen Secrets
Everyone wants to look their best and as beautiful as they can. Many of us spend a lot of money on branded beauty products and on numerous visits to the beauty parlour. There are a number of simple beauty treatments that we can use with things that are easily available in our homes. Here are a few home beauty tips that you can try using things from the kitchen without any extra cost.
* To cool your eyes, make eye pads using thick slices of cucumber. Another option is to use cotton pads soaked in
cold milk. Lie down and place them on your closed eyes and relax for a while.
* To prevent your lips from chapping, use hot water fermentation on your lips and then apply a mixture of petroleum jelly and honey. Apply this mixture about three times a week.
* To prevent your lips from drying you can use a ground mixture of rose petals and milk butter.
* If you have no time to shampoo your hair before going out, then brush 1 tablespoon of talcum powder or corn
flour through your hair. Try this out first when you are not in a hurry to make sure that it works the way you want.
* To prevent hair loss you should have a biotin-rich drink. Blend bananas with honey, yogurt and low fat milk. Drink this for a few weeks.
* To condition your hair, after shampooing take some conditioner on your palm and rub it with both hands. Apply
from the hair shaft moving downwards. Do not apply on your scalp. Rinse your hair after 5 minutes.
* To add extra shine and glow to your hair add 2 tablespoons of malt vinegar. Use it as a last rinse and towel dry your hair.
Q: I am quite happy with my skin but there’s just one problem; I have rough skin on my elbows. Please tell me how to soften them as they look real bad? Shumaila
A: Thick, dark skin on elbows is one of those annoying body problems you've likely inherited from someone. To soften rough skin on elbows, try exfoliation in the shower with a scrub and bath mitt. Follow with a heavy moisturiser. At-home microdermabrasion creams can also exfoliate a few layers of dead skin. But for the hardcore alligator-skinned cases, you're best off visiting a dermatologist for a round of acid peels on the elbow. Laser peels can also be effective, but must be administered by a specialist.
Q: I keep getting blackheads on my nose and its not possible for me to go to a parlour each time. How can I treat them at home? Zarmeena
A: Use this exfoliating scrub and then see the difference. Mix two tsp each of dried orange peel, rice and oatmeal powders and five tsp multani mitti and store in a jar. Take one tsp at a time, mix with buttermilk and apply on the blackheads. When dry scrub off.
Q: I have scanty and dry, coarse hair and cannot style my hair well. Going to a party is always stressful for me as I hate my hair. Please solve my problem. Naheed
A: Oil hair with amla oil. To soften hair make a paste of two handfuls of hibiscus leaves and add five tsp honey to it. Apply this from the scalp to the hair and cover with a shower cap for 45 minutes. Shampoo and condition your hair. Do this twice a week for a month. Also check for thyroid or any internal weakness.
Q: I sleep late at night and lately I have noticed that my under eye circles are becoming darker. Help me please! Humeira
A: Massage the eye area with a mix of five drops each of almond and coconut oils. Grate half a cucumber and apply as an eye pad. Leave on for fifteen minutes before washing off.
Q: I had acne till a few weeks back but now I am left with the marks. Can you please tell me the best way of getting rid of acne blemishes? Naima
A: Mix two tsp each dried pea, sandalwood, masoor daal and rice powder with a paste made of two handful basil leaves. Take one tsp of it and mix with one tsp water, and apply on the blemishes. When dry dab with coconut water and scrub off. Do this daily for two weeks.
Q: Why is vitamin E such an important ingredient? Tazeen
A: Vitamin E in all of its forms is one of the most powerful ingredients for maintaining healthy skin. It works by protecting the skin from free radical damage that can lead to a host of skin problems. It actively softens the skin and improves the skin’s ability to bind water and moisture to itself. Finally, it has exceptional anti-inflammatory properties.
Q: Can you tell me what to do to get rid of liver spots (age spots) on my hands? Anila
A: As we age, our hands may develop liver spots (or age spots), which are blemishes typically caused by overexposure to damaging UV rays from the sun. Liver spots can be removed by laser technique. To prevent liver spots, use hand creams with SPF protection. Your hands will give away your age as you get older, even if your face is as lineless as that of a 20-year-old's.
