September 12, 1953 – Jacqueline Bouvier married John Fitzgerald Kennedy

The much talked about wedding took place in Rhode Island. At the time of the wedding, Kennedy was a Senator in the US Congress. In 1960, Kennedy won the presidency after beating Republican candidate Richard Nixon.


September 13, 1933 – A woman was elected to New Zealand Parliament for the first time

Elizabeth McCombs won the by-elections for the parliamentary seat of Lyttelton, which was held by her husband before he died in August 1933. New Zealand extended suffrage to women in 1893.


September 14, 1985 – The Golden Girls made the television debut

The popular American sitcom about four single and older women living together in a Miami ran for six seasons on NBC. The main characters were played by Beatrice Arthur, Estelle Getty, Rue McClanahan, and Betty White.


September 15, 2008 – Lehman Brothers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection

Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. filed for the bankruptcy protection. This was the largest bankruptcy ever in the US history.


September 16, 1963 – Malaysia was created

The Federation of Malaya united with Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore to create Malaysia. Singapore left the arrangement two years later.


September 17, 1809 – Treaty of Fredrikshamn was signed between Sweden and Russia

Also known as the Treaty of Hamina, it concluded the Finnish War and ceded Swedish territories, which later formed Finland to Russia.


September 18, 1959 – Vanguard 3 was launched into the Earth's orbit

The geocentric satellite was launched into Earth's orbit by a Vanguard rocket, built by Glenn L Martin Company, which is now known as Lockheed-Martin.
