A Sensitive Climax

When I first saw that Hira Salman was leading the fray with the title role in Pagli, honestly, I thought she won’t be up to the task. Let me tell you why. I mean, obviously, leading life and career with Mani would mean something. He is an A-grade artiste, and some calibre should rub off on Hira. But, my thoughts were on the subject matter. Momina Duraid had, this time, picked a classically light-hearted story by the famous writer, Shaukat Thanvi. In the 40s, 50s and 60s, they used to write with that dreamy abandon, which would lean towards sensitive intervals. That kind of writing is no more. You know, like you see in Shafiqur Rehman. Would a young millennial girl reach out for that kind of dreamy, solitary sensitivity? To tell you the truth, Hira surprised me with her sensitive rendering. I had been watching her in Yaqeen Ka Safar, but that was a bland role. In this serial, she lived up to the role, especially in the climactic scenes. As I said that dreamy look was always there in plays, serials and films. To bring that kind of look back in the new millennium, on TV, was a challenge. It was an adaptation, but it was very well done. I must also praise Noor Hassan who maintained the same ‘period’ mood of the first half of the 20th century.
