Model-turned-actress Anushka Sharma and the cricket star of the new age Virat Kohli – sounds like a match made in heaven, and so agreed everyone who saw them together for they looked picture perfect. They clicked instantly after meeting on the sets of an advertisement for a shampoo and news about them dating soon began to do rounds. After dating each other on-and-off for a couple of years, the duo finally tied the knot last month. Here’s a breakdown of their matrimonial shenanigans.

The Italian extravaganza

Yes, the media and their fans went crazy when the news of their marriage broke, but what’s crazier is that the couple had actually eloped with their family and friends to Tuscany, Italy for a destination wedding partly for a picturesque setting, and to avoid all the media frenzy, and they succeeded in doing so. Everyone only got to know when pictures of their ceremonies started being published after Anushka and Virat posted pictures from their ceremony with the same caption on their respective social media accounts and broke the news. Thereafter, different pictures of their wedding plus other functions started doing rounds on the internet, sending the fans and media into a fit of excitement.

The entire wardrobe for the bride and groom was designed by Sabyasachi. The couple kicked off the festivities with the engagement ceremony, where Anushka proved her fashion credentials, as she wore a velvet sari in the designer’s signature ‘gulkand burgundy’ hue. The lightly-embellished drape was hand-embroidered with miniature pearls, zardozi and marori. A stunning uncut diamond and pearl choker with matching studs also accompanied the look, while kohl-rimmed eyes, red roses in her tresses and a micro dot bindi finished it off. Virat kept it classic in a well-tailored navy blue three-piece suit, crisp white shirt, white floral lapel pin and a metallic tie. Next up was the mehendi ceremony where the actress wore a graphic hand-embroidered lehenga in fuchsia pink and orange that was hand-printed and hand-embroidered with gota and marori. She paired it with a trendy floral blouse, a pair of jhumkas crafted in 22k gold with Iranian turquoise, tourmalines, uncut diamonds and Japanese cultured pearls, custom shoes in hand woven brocade and zardozi. Even Virat mixed it up with a khadi kurta and churidaar pajama with fuchsia pink textured silk Nehru jacket. He grounded the look with a pair of tan leather footwear with a zardozi crest, specifically made for this ensemble.

For thier fairy tale moment on the wedding day, the bride wore a pale pink lehenga featuring a voluminous skirt with fairy tale-esque silver-gold metal thread embroidery and pearls and beads embellishments. The Sultan star topped it off with ethereal, traditional jewellery – a mathapatti, layered necklaces and jhumkas in pearls and pink spinel, looking every bit a dream. The cricketer, however, kept things smooth and simple; his donned hand-embroidered ivory raw silk sherwani, completing the ensemble with a rose silk turban and a tussar stole with zardozi work along the border.

The Delhi homecoming

Virat and Anushka landed in India a few days after their wedding in Italy and prior to holding a grand reception, the first of the two receptions, in Delhi. The function was attended mainly by close friends and family members of the bride and groom. Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi was one of the high profile guests in attendance. The beaming bride was seen in her appropriately festive tomato red and gold Benarasi sari, a change from the dramatically embellished gowns brides are known to opt for on their big night. The Phillauri star accessorised her understated, classic look with an opulent uncut diamond choker and jhumkas. To complete her look, Anushka chose heavily kohled eyes, nude lips and dewy make-up, with her hair tied up in a sleek bun. Virat absolutely smashed it in a black textured silk bandhgala with hand-embroidered antique Pashmina shawl. The couple also met the prime minister once separately where they wore traditional dresses in different shades of blue.

The Mumbai closing

After hosting their first reception in Delhi, the high-profile couple hosted their second reception and last of the wedding festivities in Mumbai that was attended by stars from both, cricket and the film world. The bride wrapped up her stylish streak and partied it up in a breathtaking sparkle-adorned vintage-feeling lehenga. The beautifully embellished high-waist lehenga had a matching choli in shades of smoky grey and champagne with a shimmery dupatta, which was clinched on the waist with the belt. Anushka accessorised her look with a necklace and earrings handcrafted with rose cut diamonds, solitaires, briolettes and Japanese baroque pearls along with her red bridal chuda. She left her hair gloriously natural with soft waves swept over to one side and paired it with stained pale lips and just the right amount of pink blush for vintage flushed cheeks. Virat’s parting shot was a well-tailored velvet navy blue bandhgala and ivory Jodhpuri breeches. He paired it with a baby pink shirt and matching pocket square, looking exactly how a modern groom should look.
