Star Wars’ enthusiasts are willing to spend up to €3,000 to currency buy their very own lightsabers and these flashy weapons aren’t just for display, for the force is certainly with the expanding group of fans who have taken this sporting craze on another level. Dublin’s Sean O’Casey Community Centre in East Wall and Wicklow’s Bray Bowl run combat classes which have been filled up by buffs of the sci-fi franchise.

To bring the sport to Ireland, Jim Tuohy travelled to Italy – home of the Ludosport Lightsaber Combat Academy – around three years back. “I saw it on the internet, on a video game site, and got in contact because I’d been teaching martial arts here. Then, I asked if we could bring this over to Ireland and they were completely accommodating,” he said.

Representatives of the academy asked him to visit and watch a tournament then decide on setting up to train with them. Months later, Tuohy conducted his first class in Dublin and with the film coming out recently, he has had at least two or three new people joining the academy every week. Trainees are taught the various styles of attack and defence, while the more experienced ones take part in lightsaber duels.
