Singers Are Actors – In Altered Roles

Nope, I didn’t much like Bruno Mars’ song at the Grammy Awards, but it sure was more melodious than those rapper nerds… ummm, yes, slightly caustic, but that’s what criticism is all about. Sorry, it’s globalisation again, my pet subject. Actually, that is what happens when singers act and actors sing. I mean, it’s everywhere. In Pakistan, Fawad Khan, Farhan Saeed, Junaid Khan, Adeel Chaudhry, Asim Azhar, Gohar Mumtaz and others are acting (I expect to see the good-looking Mustehsin in a serial one of these days!). On the other side, Sajal Aly is turning into a proper singer, as she did a wonderful job crooning the title of her serial, O Rangreza. One of the best of Four-Man Show, Mohsin Abbas Haider turned out to be such a talented singer, who sang well for the Coke Studio, too. But this is, as is apparent, all over the world. Beyonce was such a lovely film star, though she did not persist. Most rappers acted in crazy comedies. Baba Saigol was a film star too in the early 90s. Mariah Carey also acted in a couple of films. Priyanka Chopra did a decent job of singing some hits. Music director Himesh Reshamiya did films, but they flopped badly. Our very own Ali Haider, Ali Azmat and Meesha Shafi have acted in films. Naseebo Lal tried acting, but couldn’t put enough zing to it. Ataullah Esakhelvi, Arif Lohar, Shahida Mini and Aasma Lata acted in quite a few films in the 90s, with big hits to their name. Atif Aslam has appeared with Mahira Khan in Bol – so, it’s a worldwide malady. Amongst the drama lot, Fawad and Junaid are quite decent actors, though Junaid hasn’t had a serial, yet, like Humsafar. Mostly, singers haven’t expressed themselves as actors. Jis ka kaam, us hi ko sajhey!
