A TOUCH APART

While some celebrities tend to use their star power for their own benefits, quite a few others use it to help the society and to give back to the people they receive so much love from. Here are a few Bollywood actors who stand up for social causes in their time on and off screen.

John Abraham

The actor is known to be a part of various social initiatives. He is closely associated with PETA and has been working for animal rights for a long time. Unlike many celebrities who serve social purposes as a PR gimmick, John shies away from the media and works silently and solely to serve the cause. He even has his own brigade that works towards providing shelter for the needy.

Shabana Azmi

A well-known social activist, she has voiced her opinion on a variety of issues, especially women's rights, and used the platform of movies and award shows to do so. Along with working for women's rights and speaking openly against the objectification of women in the entertainment industry, the actress has fought against the stigma and injustice against those associated with AIDS.

Nana Patekar

Since September 2015, Nana has been donating INR 15,000 each, to widows of the farmers who committed suicide in the drought-hit Maharashtra. To relieve them of their debts, he collected INR 80 lakh through an NGO he runs with actor Makrand Anaspure, and distributed financial help to 113 families in Latur and Osmanabad. Earlier, the actor had also donated INR 12.75 lakh to 85 such families.

Aamir Khan

There has been a ripple effect after Mr Perfectionist started hosting India’s first talk show on social issues. Aamir has raised his voice in support of various campaigns and protests, including Narmada Bachao Andolan, Jan Lok Pal Bill and the Supreme Court judgement against homosexuality. Even his professional choices in the recent years reflect on his consciousness about social issues.

Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka is undoubtedly one of the biggest global icons right now. Apart from being a brilliant actress, she is also an active social activist. She is UNICEF's Global Ambassador and has flown to various countries to help the children in need. The Barfi! star has also been a part of an initiative to support eco-friendliness and improve electricity supplies to rural villages in India.

Akshay Kumar

Apart from launching free martial arts training school for women, the actor had also announced a donation of INR 90 lakh which would help as many as 180 families of farmers who had committed suicide in the drought-hit region of Marathwada. Akshay's team donated INR 15 lakh to 30 widows and planned to donate the same amount every month, for the next five months.

Rahul Bose

He is not only a splendid actor but has also actively worked towards the upliftment of the Indian society. Rahul founded a parent organisation for many charitable organisations and NGO clusters in Mumbai and another NGO, which focuses on providing education for children from lower economic backgrounds in Andaman & Nicobar Islands. He was also one of the first Bollywood celebrities to become a Global Ambassador in 2007.
