Sesame Place (that’s a Sesame Street themed amusement park) has become the first theme park in the world to become a dedicated autism centre. In addition to training for staff and a new Ride Accessibility Program, the park now has two quiet rooms near Big Bird’s Rambling River. These have adjustable lighting and comfortable seating so those who are feeling overwhelmed can have a break from all the action.

The park now also offers noise-cancelling headphones to anyone who’d like them, low sensory areas, and a pre-visit sensory guide that parents can check through to plan their child’s day. All staff have completed training in how autism can affect people, as well as in emotional awareness, motor skills, communication, and sensitivity. Officials with the theme park teamed up with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards to get official certification for the park.
