OVERBOARD

Kate (Anna Faris) is a hardworking single mom with three daughters who works two jobs – one as a delivery woman, and the other as a cleaner – yet she is about to be evicted from her home. Things aren’t working out for her.

One day, Kate has a cleaning gig aboard an uber-posh Yacht owned by Leonardo (Eugenio Derbez), the snobbish son of the world third richest man. Leonardo pushes Kate off of his boat after a petty argument, throwing her expensive equipment in the water – which makes her lose her job.

Fate, though, has a cruel trick in store for Leonardo, who ends up losing his memory, which Kate exploits to her advantage. Leonardo is tricked into believing that he is her husband, and has to support the family.

If this sounds familiar, that is because Overboard is a remake of the 1987 rom-com starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, which was remade into Ek Ladka Ek Ladki with Salman Khan and Neelam Kothari. In both versions, the spoiled, rich person is the woman. Here, the roles are reversed, though nothing much seems to change.

Hardly, a sacrosanct material, this reworking is calm, sober, sweet and its comedy is far from raucous – and that rarity might just work in the story’s favour. •
