The Real Power of A Star

Salman Khan is the only actor who has got three movies in the Rs 300-crore range Race 3, directed by Remo D’souza, has been slammed from day one, and rightly so. It’s a huge disappointment content-wise. However, as far as box-office numbers go, the film may net (please note net, not gross) around Rs 170 crores in its India lifetime. And, this is huge.

Then why are Salman's detractors chastising him continuously? Honestly, with the exception of Aamir Khan, the only other megastar in Hindi cinema, none of the other so-called Bollywood superstars get these numbers even for their superhits.

When Salman told After Hrs in an interview that “the only race one must run is, against oneself,” he was right. For the last 11 years, he has been virtually doing that. He is the only actor who has got three movies in the Rs 300-crore range, one in the Rs 200-crore plus range and nine Rs 100-crore films including the current ‘flop’ Race 3.

An industry source says, “The trade is dejected with Race 3’s collections not because they aren’t high, but because expectations from Salman are humongous. His films are sold at such a high ratio that they need to rake in at least Rs 250 crores to justify that cost.”

TILL DATE, SALMAN HAS…

Thirteen: Rs 100-cr plus films (Dabangg, Ready, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger, Dabangg 2, Jai Ho, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Tubelight and Race 3)

ONE: Rs 200-cr plus film (Kick)
THREE: 300-cr plus films (Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sultan, Tiger Zinda Hai)
