Rising 35 stories above Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the Carlyle Hotel has been a second home for A-listers including members of the royal family to celebrities like George Clooney.

The Carlyle has been an elegant playground for the rich and famous for nearly 90 years. The hotel, which opened in 1930, has hosted luminaries from Lucille Ball and John F. Kennedy to David Bowie and Jack Nicholson. A seamstress even makes monogrammed pillowcases for guests in rooms that cost from $550 t0 $20,000 a night (for the Empire Suite). The dazzling art deco lobby features gold velvet chairs, black marble floors and old master paintings. Bemelmans Bar is a timeless location that attracts socialites, politicians, movie stars and moguls. This sophisticated and upscale piano bar, adorned with Ludwig Bemelmans’ famed murals dropped in for the chance to catch impromptu performances from the likes of Lady Gaga and Bono because as far as piano bars go, there's nowhere that does classiness quite like this.

Not only is it the mainstay for Broadway star Elaine Stritch (who lived at the Carlyle for 12 years) and singer/pianist Bobby Short, Princess Diana was also a frequent guest during the 90s. When Prince William and Kate Middleton made their first visit to New York in December 2014, they followed suit, as the Carlyle welcomed them with the British flag flying.
