REINVENTING FASHION MADONNA

The woman who introduces the ‘M’ in MTV

‘Queen of Pop’, ‘Mother of Fashion Reinvention’ and ‘Material Girl’ are namely a few titles Madonna has been crowned with throughout her belligerently beautiful career spanning three decades. Known as the woman to put the ‘M’ in MTV, the indisputable fashion icon of America celebrated her 60th birthday recently, but still refuses to age. We take a gander at the ways she delivered an indelible impact on fashion and culture, globally.

POP’S SYMBOL OF REINVENTION

One has never seen a pop diva reinventing her fashion image with the consistency and creativity of Madonna. Over the course of her 30-plus-year career, she evolved into a fashion-forward icon whose sense of style became as influential as her chart-topping tunes. According to her stylist of 20 years, mostly what Madonna [wears] is an evolution of what is relevant at the time. In the 80’s she gave birth to the fashion of wearing endless amount of rubber bracelets and her trademark hair ribbon – that would later inspire the army of Madonna wannabes who followed the emerging star’s every move. Amongst the plethora of her trend-setting looks is her Papa Don't Preach music video, where she debuted a brand-new, understated ‘bad girl’ look with her cropped, peroxide-bleached hair and black biker jacket showed a different flavour of her edgy street style.

SHE CONVERGED HER CONFIDENCE AND STYLE TO FASHION STARDOM

The early Madonna is quintessential of accumulating her style points as means to self-expression. Madonna’s ability to transform herself for albums, videos, photo shoots, tours and movies made her a master of perpetual transformation. As she rolled from one aesthetic to the next, switching up her hair, her choreography, her accent, it became shorthand to describe what was happening in one word: reinvention.

SHE ALWAYS HAS BEEN A FASHION INFLUENCER

Madonna's influence as a fashion leader has been consistent from the beginning of her career. Her style has been watched and followed from the moment she first appeared on MTV. She has launched style trends such as wearing navel-baring fashions, affecting the clothing choices both, of other celebrities and the public at large. Her continual repackaging of herself has reflected her evolution as a woman and a performer. She has worn haute couture, supporting both, known and unknown designers, and marketed mainstream fashions, with her looks encompassing different personas. The ubiquity of her unique and highly individual style makes Madonna an icon of modern fashion.

SHE MADE THE WORLD DANCE, FASHIONABLY

For those of us who think we know the real Madonna, she will always be a modern dancer. Not a singer who dances, but a dancer who sings. Madonna always has been an exceptional dancer, blessed with a highly coordinated body and natural rhythm that allow her to get inside any groove. There’s something about her career, with its rigour and free-spirited abandon, which feels like a dance – singing may be her main artistic channel, but her performance is a passionate and ever-growing piece of choreography. Her gift to us has a ring of the eternal: She gave us back our bodies. With each new record, comes a new artistic incarnation – and a new Madonna.
