David Dhawan is one of those filmmakers who don’t need logic when making a film; even then, he uses some in Judwaa 2, the reboot of his original classic from the 90s. As Raja and Prem, Varun Dhawan takes centre stage and falls in love with Jacqueline Fernandez and Taapsee Pannu. Like the 90s version, the film shows a set of twins living apart – one in India and one abroad – and while one becomes a tapori, the other is a perfect A-grade student who loves music. Originally, the brothers’ movements were linked to each other while here, that is only possible when they are in close proximity, which makes sense.

Varun Dhawan is the star of the film, as he gets to play both, weak and strong versions, just like Salman Khan did 20 years back. His chemistry with both the heroines is brilliant but then, so was Salman’s in the original; thankfully, the director decided to go for good looking girls instead of someone like Rambha back then who was seen in just a couple of more films. Yes, the story is different this time but the sequences aren’t. There is still a concert where the lead pair sings Chalti Hai Kya 9 Se 12; there is a sequence featuring the song Oonchi Hai Building, as well as the bathroom scene where both the guys are in the same frame with the heroines for the first time. However, the dialogues by Sajid-Farhad kept the audience interested, as they made jokes about everything filmi – from Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘ammi jaan kaha karti theen’ to pop culture references, the audience were in fits of laughter, which is great considering they were familiar with most of the jokes.

Judwaa 2 has a cameo appearance in the end without which the film would have been complete anyway; the heroines get bigger roles this time but sadly, Upasana Singh, as the mother of Samaira and Rajpal Yadav as Raja’s friend, disappointed big time. It was evident from Rajpal’s face that he wasn’t enjoying playing sidekick to a comedian. The rest of the cast did a decent job and one hopes that David Dhawan continues to give solid entertainers like this one in the future as well. •
