Deepika replaces Kiran Rao as chairperson of MAMI

Ever since she got a hero's welcome in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat, Deepika Padukone has been working towards positioning herself as the first among equals in Bollywood.

Now, moving a notch higher, Deepika has been appointed as chairperson of MAMI (The Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image), a post previously held by Kiran Rao.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali, whose Deepika-Ranveer trilogy Ram Leela, Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat played a big role in establishing Deepika's supremacy, says that the honour is richly deserved. “There is a lot more to her. Deepika is one of the finest artistes I've worked with. She never surrenders to melodrama even when there is ample temptation to do so.”

In Deepika, SLB fondly sees glimpses of three legendary actresses: Vyjanthimala, Hema Malini and Waheeda Rehman.

According to certain reports, Kiran Rao stepped down from the position of MAMI chairperson because she wanted to focus on her film projects. She had released an official statement, welcoming Deepika.

Deepika received a warm welcome from other members of the committee on social media, calling it great to see the baton pass from one woman to another.
