Following the footsteps of international streaming giants like Netflix, YouTube and Eros, the web series realm is testing its footing in Pakistan and the prospects look promising so far. Production houses and aspiring filmmakers have put their heads together to come up with content which clicks better with the audience. Earlier, we had Sadia Jabbar’s Shameless Proposal making for a refreshing stream whilst busting stereotypes in its wake. While the Mehwish Hayat starrer Enaya could only rake in more controversies than viewers. The web series trajectory in Pakistan is still too young to predict where it heads, but we have our hopes up for new ventures.

Last week, in a press meet-up held by Imagine Nation, the team disclosed the plans for their upcoming web series, which will mark their debut in the realm. A fast-food chain appeared to be an odd spot for holding press meet-ups, but we later learned that KFC was the team’s official food partner. The floor space was buzzing with bloggers and reporters awaiting the character reveal.

Newest-on-the-block, Imagine Nation pictures (IN) is the brainchild of four filmmakers Sami Rehman (of Bekaar Films fame), Rida Zahra, Ghania Asad and Sidrah Jamil. IN’s goal is to present a range of different genres and exciting content that would inspire the Pakistani youth.

Enter BFFs – read Best Friends Forever – the web series is now up for streaming on YouTube. The cast and crew revealed that the web series would comprise of a total of six episodes with each episode releasing every Friday. What can we expect from the local series? Appearing to be a light-hearted, youth centric and a fourth-wall-breaking, experimental comedy, the web series revolves around two best friends (Rida and Sami) who are at crossroads, when it comes to choosing their friendship over love, in the face of an ultimatum. As the audience were foretold about the story, there were muted mutterings of “no spoilers, please!” but the cast assured that none will be given. The no-spoiler reveal continued to an engaging yet odd cusp for a plot. The ‘best friends’ decide to get married in a bid to salvage their friendship (a very confusing love-story trajectory if I may add). But here is a plot twist – the new couple doesn’t even have an ounce of romance between them. Life after marriage is difficult and not what the two young friends had imagine. What unfolds and what’s in store for either of them; will love blossom between the two bffs or is the relationship on the brink of its end?

The cast promises special appearances by a few well known YouTubers which will emerge in a couple of episodes.
