Moscow’s Golden Apple hotel is one of the city’s first ever boutiques. It still lures first timers and returning guests in equal measure thanks to its hip interior, intimate atmosphere and stellar service – plus it’s within striking distance of many of Moscow’s major sights.

The Golden Apple is set on Ulitsa Malaya Dmitrovka, just north of the Boulevard Ring in central Moscow. It’s around a 20-minute walk along the Strastnoy Bulvar to reach Red Square and the Kremlin but the adjacent area also hosts several interesting historic sights such as the early 17th-century Church of the Nativity of Our Lady in Putinki, the 19th-century Hermitage Gardens and the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, all of which are within a mile or two.

The hotel is located inside a 19th-century mansion with a striking stone façade, but the interiors, are unapologetically chic and minimal: cool blacks, whites and greys matched to bolder reds, yellows and greens, and public areas and rooms dotted with designer furnishings.

Each room is decorated in contemporary-style with distinctive and different colour schemes (red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet) for each floor. Alongside these bright, dapper colours, the rooms feature specially commissioned Italian furnishings, Philippe Starck light fittings and marble-clad bathrooms with heated floors, and in-room amenities including writing desks, satellite TVs and free Wi-Fi.

The Apple Restaurant is every bit as stylish as the rest of the hotel, with rows of tables running the length of the restaurant and brightly coloured walls featuring an apple-tree motif. The menu mixes traditional Russian dishes and international standards such as burgers, salads and sandwiches.

The cosy Apple Cafe has comfy armchairs and couches, live DJs in the evenings and a menu that spans sushi and tapas. Breakfast is a very generous spread of international, Russian and European items and good-quality coffees, juices and teas.
