FACEBOOK: LIBRA IS UNDERWAY

SOCIAL MEDIA NEWS

Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has reaffirmed his commitment to the social network’s quest to launch Libra cryptocurrency despite pushback from governments and critics. Facebook unveiled plans for Libra in an announcement that sparked fears of the unintended consequences of a loosely supervised global currency. Switzerland’s financial watchdog FINMA has already pledged to conduct oversight of the Geneva-based Libra Association that will watch over the digital money, which is expected to debut next year. “Projects like Libra with a global and potentially systemic footprint… raise serious regulatory and systemic concerns, as well as wider policy issues, which both need to be addressed before such projects can be implemented,” said Facebook in a statement.

Instagram: No more like counts

Instagram has rolled out a feature that prevents users from seeing how many ‘likes’ posts have. The Facebook-owned app claims it will help its users worry less about the success or popularity of posts on the platform. People in Australia, Brazil, Ireland, Italy, Japan and New Zealand will have the number of likes that a post receives hidden from their feeds, following a trial of the feature in Canada. “We want people to worry a little bit less about how many likes they’re getting on Instagram and spend a bit more time connecting with the people that they care about,” said Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri.
