Matching makeup trends have come, and gone, in many variations. There's matching your lipstick to your nail polish (a favourite of ours and often dubbed "matching lips and tips" in the beauty community), coordinating your eyeshadow or lip colour to your outfit, and, perhaps the most on-trend right now, monochromatic makeup.

Monochromatic makeup, as the name implies, is the technique of keeping your eyes, lips, and cheeks within one shade range – and it's having a huge moment right now. To wit, everyone from Rihanna to Gigi Hadid has been hitting the red carpet sporting perfectly coordinated shades.

With the exception of double denim, for some time the rule books have insisted that it’s far from cool to match anything – it looks too formulaic, too done. But after a summer in which everyone from Margot Robbie to Kendall Jenner was doing some form of beauty matching, we’re throwing out any such rule book and proclaiming monochromatic, matching make-up the trend of the summer.

Colour coding face

There are a variety of different ways to approach the look. The simplest – and prettiest – route is to use one shade on eyes, cheeks and lips for a synergistically colour-coded face – it’s easier to pull off than you might think. Or, pair one element of your make-up with the colour of your outfit, which can be as bold as you like. And if you’re really throwing out the rule book, why not do both as per Gigi Hadid?

Rosy climes

It's no secret that Zendaya does her own makeup frequently, including this deep pink look she created on herself. It's easy to copy, thanks to the universally flattering hue. Simply pretend you're creating a smoky eye: Dust the lightest hue over your browbone, a medium hue on your lid, and a deep hue in the crease. Use a blending brush to buff any harsh lines to soft perfection, then finish with a deep rose blush and a lippie.

Peachy business

Park has tried nearly every daring makeup trend as of late – from bright-blue shadow to frosty-pink lipstick – and that's just in the past few months. But this take on the mono look she made all her own. Using shades of peach on her lips and cheeks, then smudged a similar hue under her bottom lash line to bring it all together.

Texture matters

Makeup artists recommend deploying creamy textures for their malleability and ease of application. You just have to dab them on with your fingers and they easily blend onto lips, cheeks and eyes. Highlighting that you can also use your lipstick on cheeks and eyes too, provided it’s the right colour and you blend well.

Sculpt game

From sculpting cheekbones to bringing out the colour in your eyes, using the same shade on your focal facial features harmonises the face, uniting it in the pursuit of perfect contour and polished features. In fact, it's your quick ticket to looking pulled together.

Mind your skin tone

The easiest way to match make-up is to choose a colour which naturally occurs on your face. That might be pink if you’re fair or beige and brown shades if you have darker skin. Getting the right hue for your skin tone is key to enhancing features without being too visually jarring.

We may have only just come to terms with the fact that coloured mascara is a thing, but that hasn't stopped our antennae from tuning into the newest instalment of bold colour for the face. This new addition to the list of ‘trends we’re sceptical about’ is neon make-up: a pop of colour where it’s least expected – on our skin. A quick scroll of your feed is all it takes to see everyone from Kendall Jenner and Rihanna to Margot Robbie and Tracee Ellis Ross having a go at quick slicks of electric bright liner, or full-blown neon shadow – albeit with a little help from their A-list make-up artists. But can the non-supermodels of the world really pull it off?
