Headbang for the headband

#TRENDALERT

Hair accessories emerged as one of the biggest street-style trends to come from the runway, royals and influencers

2019 was hair candy of all kinds. Claw clips? Fun! Scrunchies? We'll take one in every colour. Gemstone bobby pins? Stack 'em up. But of all the '90s-throwback hair accessories that have seen trend revivals recently, the humble headband is perhaps the most stylishly summer-ready of them all.

This season, red-carpet regulars, A-listers, to Instagram's mega-influencers alike have been topping their hair with a perfectly-placed band across the crown – and it's giving us all kinds of easy-updo inspiration. Padded, wrapped, studded with pearls; however you take your headband, there's a cool-girl way to style it that can take you from your next black-tie wedding to Saturday's brunch, and every warm-weather occasion in between.

BOHEMIAN WAY

Pick a scatter-brained pattern for a headband, setting loose a few strands of your tresses, for an effortlessly hip and free-spirited look. Way to go, boho chic!

Jessica Alba proves that the simple skinny black headband is back, and even better when teased for extra volume at the crown – complete with hoop earrings and a power lip.

Satin summer

The trend has been worn by many in the form of plushy satin headbands, ascending mainly from the spring runways, and other colourful versions. Other hair accessories range from the more demure, with refined bobby pins and decorated barrettes, to the more extravagant with chainmail headpieces and tiaras.

Jazz up a minimalist outfit

The fashion crowd has been quick to take on the trend, gracing our feeds with eye-catching head candy we can’t wait to try ourselves. Not only are headbands an easy, low-lift way to jazz up even the simplest of outfits on dreary winter days, but there are also plenty of diverse styles on the market right now to cater to every taste and budget.

Bandana wrap paired with eastern apparel? Sure, why not. Imparts a contemporary chic look. Don’t shy from pairing it with chunky statement earrings.

Royals in headbands

You can hardly be surprised that fashion icon Diana, Princess of Wales sported the headband in the most glamorous way ever, right? In 1986, whilst at a dinner hosted By Emperor Hirohito in Japan, the royal teamed her blue Yuki evening dress with a dazzling sapphire and diamond version. So eye-catching and glittery – it was a total gem. The Duchess of Cambridge has long championed headbands and we lost count of how many she wore in 2018. As we look at all the royals rocking the ultra-glam headgear and you may be surprised at how many wore them before they were officially cool.
