Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy animated short film about acid crimes

The famous Aagahi series, a project of Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy serves as a public service campaign to empower and educate women about their legal rights in Pakistan. Recently, the series released its eighth animation short film titled, Acid Crimes. Aagahi was also recently nominated at the 66th Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity for the Sustainable Development Goals Lions in the Gender Equality category.

Acid Crimes attempts to zero into the nature of the acid crime and its various forms, particularly the ones with intent of harming another human being. The short video comprising of three minutes, initiates a dialogue by discussing punishments for convicted offenders, illegal usage and sale of acid and other corrosive chemicals. It also highlights how these are punishable crimes with laws in the Pakistani legal system, including a sentence of 14 years in jail, life imprisonment, one million rupee fine or all of the above.

SOC films also incorporate the safety measures taken subsequently if a victim involved in an incident. The short film also provides the audiences with contact information for various helplines, women shelter homes, counselling services and legal support services, available for acid attack survivors.
