Catastrophic monsoon season

With the arrival of monsoon season in Karachi, and unexpected heavy rains, Karachiites faced catastrophic after-effects which resulted in the death of approximately 20 people due to electrocution, urban flooding and poor drainage system of the city. Moreover factors like unsatisfactory disposal of garbage, residue of the slaughtered animals from Eid-ul-Azha and rainwater led to the surge of mosquitoes, infestation of flies and spread of fatal diseases. The government should take immediate steps to eradicate the ongoing problems brought by the rains and make fool-proof preparations for the remaining monsoon season as showers are expected to last till the end of the month, and Karachi cannot afford more destruction.

Dog Culling

Dog culling, the reduction of dog population by means of slaughter, has become a common practice in Pakistan, especially in Karachi. Authorities like KMC (Karachi Metropolitan Corporation) and CBC (Cantonment Board Clifton) have been killing street dogs of Karachi either by brutally shooting them, or by poisoning them; leaving the dogs to die a painful death. Not only the authorities, but now even the common citizens of Karachi have started following this practice. This inhumane act needs to stop. The government needs to carry out a spay/neuter campaign because that is the only humane solution to control the increasing number of dogs in the streets of Karachi.

Unlawful killings

It seems like taking justice in their own hands has become a common culture among the people of Pakistan. Recently, an alleged teenage thief was beaten to death in Bahadurabad. The murderers claimed that the boy was a trained thief and they somehow assumed that it was justifiable for them to murder him. Another such incident occurred in Rahim Yar Khan where the police acted outside their jurisdiction by torturing to death a robbery suspect named Salahuddin Ayubi. These incidents show the failure of the law and order authorities. Also, it shows how ruthless and merciless our society is becoming.

Untoward incident

Schools are considered to be the second home for students. They spend a large measure of their time here, which makes teachers their second parents, and guardians while they are in the premises of the school. A recent incident happened in a school in Lahore where a 17-year-old boy was beaten to death by his own teacher within the premises of the institute. Teachers are supposed to be spiritual parents for the students, they are the guardians of a civilization, and they are the first brick in the social development of individuals and communities. Incidents like these cloud and discredit the prestige of this profession and its ethics, and it is hoped that events like these do not reoccur.
