Kevin was not shocked but upset as he saw the goons abducting Maria. He was looking at Rehan running after them and thought,

Poor Rehan, he’s trying to find justice for those who have been wronged but nothing is going to come out of it.

The vehicle accelerated away and Rehan couldn’t do anything. He turned back and rushed to Kevin. As he reached the spot where Kevin was standing, he said,

“What just happened? Who were those people?”

Kevin remained silent and avoided eye contact. Rehan raised his voice,

“Who were those people? How did you two get here? Answer me, Kevin!”

“Yesterday, Maria and I were forced to come here, a mysterious guy wants you to see what he is capable of…he just wants me to convince you to stop working on Mujhtaba’s case.”

“Oh my God, look Kevin I’m this close to finding the criminal, I can’t withdraw now, but we have to save Maria.”

“Just shut up and listen to me now,” Kevin angrily said, “you have gone too far, your wife has been kidnapped and you are still concerned about Mujhtaba’s case. For God’s sake, Rehan, get a life and withdraw from this case. Nothing will come out of this case. The team of Crimes at Corners is using you.”

Rehan remained silent for a moment and then said,

“Okay, okay, I will leave this case, now tell me what must we do to save her.”

“They have taken her back to Karachi, and they want us to go there.”

“Why have they dragged her in this case? Every time I do something stupid, she is the one who has to suffer.”

“Maybe, but not this time,” Kevin said.

“What do you mean?”

“This time she herself is responsible for what happened. She made a video and uploaded it.”

“What sort of video?”

“She shot a video of herself where she was asking the people to support you.”

Rehan’s eyes were filled with tears and he looked aside with a depressed face.

Oh my God, I can’t believe it, he uttered.

“We have to save her Rehan. Yesterday I had a deal with the criminals that they will negotiate if you withdraw from this case.”

“Can I ask SHO Lashari for his help?”

“No, Rehan, they are very brutal. They won’t spare anyone among us if we involved the police.”

“Oh my God, so what can we do then?”

“Just do as I say, please.”

Rehan nodded his head and listened to him carefully.

Few hours later, Rehan and Kevin were in Karachi, standing on the footpath and waiting for someone. Kevin said,

“Alright, you know what we have to do now, right?”

“I don’t know, except that we have to wait.”

“Yes, you have to wait, they will come and pick you up and then I’ll talk to them about our deal.”

“What do you mean?”

“Look, Rehan, the thing is that they did not agree on sparing both of you, anyone among you two has to die.”

“Oh God,” Rehan uttered closing his eyes.

“I’ll try and negotiate, then let’s see what happens, or else we’ll do something together.”

They saw a black vehicle making its way towards them. Rehan got tensed and Kevin got vigilant. The vehicle was parked but no one was coming out of it. They both felt strange for a while, Rehan then asked,

“Is this the car we were waiting for?”

“I don’t know, but the car in which Maria and I were brought in looked like this.”

“Oh God, please don’t make it so difficult.”

Quite unexpectedly, somebody came from the right side and hit Kevin with a wooden stick. Kevin screamed with pain and fell on the ground until he lost his consciousness.

One hour later, Kevin Rollins was lying on the floor inside a dark house. His forehead was bleeding. His eye lids were moving as if he was about to wake up. There was a guy standing next to him who said,

“I’m sure you are regretting your actions.”

Kevin slowly gained consciousness and opened his eyes. Kevin’s vision was blurred. He said,

“Please, do as we…”

“Say what?”

“Please, do as we agreed upon. Don’t kill anybody, please.”

“Get up!”

Kevin tried but he couldn’t get up,

“I can’t.”

The guy picked him up. Kevin screamed as he felt pain in his body.

He dragged his body in another room and as they entered inside, he threw Kevin back on the ground. Kevin asked,

“What have you done to my leg? Why is it feeling so painful like never before?”

“It’s broken.”

“What?”

“I have broken your bone, now shut up and come to the point.”

He picked Kevin up and made him sit on a chair.

Now, Kevin was sitting on a chair and through his facial expressions it was quite visible that he was in deep pain.

“How are you?” the guy asked.

Kevin was surprised on his question and asked him,

“How are they?”

“Don’t talk back to me. You know what brought you here.”

“I’m not embarrassed of what I did. They are nice people. Their purpose was not bad. Their intentions were not evil. But they are…”

“…Don’t!” the guy exclaimed. “Don’t go there.”

“Alright, I won’t. Just tell me what you have done to them. Where are they?”

“They are here. But their life is now in your control.”

“I’ll do what you’ll ask me to but trust me the way you are treating them, no good will come out of it. You won’t get anything from murdering innocent people.”

“You call them innocent. People who are disturbing others’ privacy and exposing their secrets to the world are innocent?”

“Well, even if they have done all of this, they still do not deserve to die.”

“By the way, Kevin, I must tell you that it was your mistake. You should have stayed out of it.”

“Out of what?” Kevin got confused.

“You should have stayed out of Mujhtaba’s case.”

“We were only trying to find justice. We had no idea things would go this far.”

“Well, now it’s too late. You have no other option but only to take any one with you today.”

“What about the other one?” Kevin asked curiously.

“The other one shall stay with me.”

“What are you going to do with…?”

“…That’s none of your business. Just tell me who do you want to take along?”

“Alright…” Kevin answered reluctantly. “You can keep Rehan.”

“I knew it. Anyways, you can see him for the last time if you really want to, because you’ll never see him again.”

“Look, sir is there any way we can negotiate, please I do not want to…”

“…Just be thankful that you are getting a chance to see your friend.”

“No, sir please, let’s talk this out, we can negotiate on this.”

“No, there will be no more negotiations, what your friends have done cannot be pardoned.”

“I understand, but…”

“Okay, that’s enough now,” he said aiming his gun towards Kevin.

Kevin got silent and gulped. The guy said before leaving,

“I’m bringing Maria, she’ll be downstairs, and you can take her and leave. And then you two will never hear from me again.”

“And what about Rehan?”

“I’m bringing him here. You can see him and talk to him for the last time but remember one thing; your words will not benefit him anyway. You can tell him that we’ll kill him or you can tell him that he better try and escape, but trust me, nothing will come out of it.”

Kevin remained silent but it was evident that he’s angry.

He left the room. Kevin thought of standing up and doing something. He however, felt extreme pain in his leg and therefore didn’t move.

A few minutes later, Rehan was brought before him on a chair and they both were sitting face to face. The guy told them,

“You both only have five minutes, after that, Kevin, you will be asked to leave or else Maria’s life would be at stake.”

Rehan closed his eyes and tears fell off his eyes. As the guy left, Kevin said to Rehan,

“Rehan, I’m really upset about what is happening with us today.”

“Yeah, I guess this is it.”

“Look, I think we should make this meeting productive.”

“Yeah, you know I want to mention that I’m really thankful to you. I’m thankful that you made a wise decision.”

“What do you mean?”

“I meant that you made a good choice when you asked them to release Maria and not me. Because I’m not the one who deserves to live, I deserve to die because I was the one who started all this. It is because of me that the poor camera guy is dead, and I didn’t even care to know.”

“Look Rehan, why aren’t you thinking about escaping from here?”

“No, I can’t,” he cried. “I don’t deserve to live. I want nothing more than death.”

“Your death is not a solution to anything, Rehan; your wife will be left alone forever.”

“I know, but I can’t. I have to die; I don’t want to live anymore.”

“Rehan, don’t be stupid, if you really want to make up for your mistakes then instead of escaping from this life, think about doing something for your wife.”

Rehan looked up at him and realised that he was right. Kevin looked at him and said,

“Think about it.”

They heard the guy’s voice from behind,

“Alright, your time is up, it’s time for you to leave, Kevin.”

They didn’t protest and simply co-operated.

Two guys came and picked up Kevin in helping him to walk. The guy said looking at Rehan,

“Now it’s just you and me. I have something interesting to discuss with you.”

“If you are so brave then why don’t you show us your face?”

“Don’t worry, you will see my face very soon, I don’t care about others but you will definitely see my face.”

“And are you brave enough to reveal your name?”

“I am not,” he replied sarcastically. “But I think you can guess.”

“I’m guessing that you are Abram.”

Meanwhile downstairs Maria was seated in the car. She was weeping helplessly but she got distracted as she saw Kevin Rollins standing outside the vehicle with two men. She looked at him hopefully and as the door opened and he sat inside the car, she asked him,

“What happened, Kevin?”

Kevin remained silent but he was very sad.

“They are not sparing his life?”

Kevin answered,

“I wish I could answer you, but I can’t.”

She understood and tears began to fall off her eyes.

“There’s nothing we can do about it,” Kevin said to her.

The car’s engine turned on and the two realised that the car was about to leave now. The street lights turned off and it got even darker.

Meanwhile, inside the building, the guy said to Rehan while walking towards the chair and sitting over it,

“Rehan, you have made me come all the way over from Interior Sindh and now you expect me to let you insult myself.”

“When did I insult you? I just guessed that you are Abram. Why does this name sound insulting to you?”

Realising the taunt in Rehan’s tone, he said,

“You are making it really difficult for yourself. I haven’t decided on this yet, that I should either kill you or spare you, but you’re making my choice easy with this tone of yours.”

“I don’t care, I’m not afraid

of you.”

“You mean, you are okay with getting shot by my hands.”

“Absolutely!”

“Very well then, in that case I must tell you that yes you were right, I am Abram.”

Rehan got a bit shaken.

“And I would also like to show you my face now,” the criminal said. The lights turned on.
