ASK A THERAPIST

What should we do when we find literally everything around us boring?

Finding literally everything boring around you appears to be more about your internal state than about your surroundings. Try to gain self-awareness about things that excite you and make you feel motivated. A bored person must define goals for himself and work towards achieving them. You can learn new things, socialise with like-minded people and become more creative with anything that you are passionate about. Trying these things will give you something to look forward to in your near future which will make you feel less bored.

How do I tackle and overcome stage anxiety?

Stage fright is very common among people such as public speakers, singers, actors and dancers. The most helpful tool to fight stage fright is to uncover the deeper fears related to being seen and heard by others. Is it the fear of showing your vulnerability or being considered less than perfect or something else? You can try shifting your focus from yourself and your fear to your true purpose. You can focus on calming thoughts and stop yourself from being worried about what can go wrong. It’s also important to practice in advance preferably in front of a mirror and remember that your biggest critic will be you, not the audience.

My mother favours my sister over me and that is very hurtful, how can I cope with this feeling?

That’s a very painful and hurtful situation to be in. First of all, I would like to tell you that even though you feel that your mother favours your sister over you, it is not your fault. It’s easy to start feeling inferior to the sibling that is being favoured over you and start to indulge in self-blame but in reality that is never the case and you don’t need to blame yourself for anything. Try expressing your feelings to your mother and explain how it makes you feel. If that’s not an option, then confide in a trusted friend or seek one-on-one therapy from a professional. •
