MEET THE MAKE-UP MAESTRO: SHOAIB KHAN

Makeup transformations are hardly nascent – stylists, artists and art directors have been doing it over the decades, employing techniques, formulas and trends to create striking looks. Yet, every now and then a makeup transformation so visually powerful, knocks the breath out of us. Stylist Shoaib Khan’s many works land the same an impact on his fans and admirers. The makeup artist has been making headlines across the country after his transformations of literary characters, public figures and celebrities went viral on social media. MAG got in touch with Khan to get insight into his works, his creations and what motivates him. He speaks his mind, “Make-up has this notoriety for being an instrument we use to conceal our imperfections however for me, it represents art, creativity, imagination, ability and in particular, our actual selves.” Read more..

How would you define yourself as a person?

I’m very passionate, hardworking and focused.

What inspired you to become a makeup artist?

Beauty! Every beautiful thing attracts me and I love beautifying people.

How did you make your way in the beauty industry?

It has always been my passion. One day, I quit my job at the bank and decided to follow my dreams; going creative with makeup.

What, in your opinion, is the most important quality in a makeup artist?

I guess maintaining their makeup kits.

How do you stay updated with the latest beauty trends?

follow and keep learning from the big names in the beauty industry. I also keep a keen eye out on what other make-up artists are doing around the world. I really love learning from other talented artists who test their skills with makeup.

How would you describe your signature makeup look?

I think it would be minimalistic.

Which element of your job do you enjoy the most?

Hairstyling!

Who among our actresses do you think has the best features to experiment makeup with?

It is going to be Maya Ali, I really love working with her.

What has been the biggest challenge of your career?

Building and proving myself in the industry.

Does everyone look better with makeup?

No! It’s all about understanding the features and then working accordingly.

What is the most important beauty advice you would like to give women?

Take good care of your skin and don’t use too many products.

Which famous artists have influenced you and how?

Deepika Padukone! She’s beautiful and it’s her strong personality I love the most.

Recently, we saw you doing insane transformations of Joker, Angelina Jolie’s character in Maleficent 2 and Deepika Padukone. Tell us more about it.

I’ve been transforming myself for years now and didn’t make it public. But then I thought for how long am I going to hide my true self from people, it was about now or never for me.

What genre of make-up is your favourite and why?

Transformational, without a shadow of a doubt.

Do you have any tips for aspiring makeup artists?

Proper hygiene is the key. Understand every individual’s features and then work on it accordingly. Practice and improve your skills constantly.
