33rd National Games 2019

Pakistan Army clinches major wins in the games hosted in Peshawar, participated by 10,000 athletes from all over Pakistan.

Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, hosted the 33rd National Games 2019. The event commenced on the 10th of November and continued till the 16th amid tight security at the Peshawar Sports Complex with athletes from across the country taking part in 32 men’s and 27 women’s games. The Quaid-e-Azam Trophy was yet again won by the Pakistan Army for the 24th time after securing 7909 points with 150 gold medals, 134 silver and 96 bronze medals. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Shah Farman gave away the Quiad-e-Azam trophy to Pakistan Army and fair-play to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s two gold medalists Murad Ahmad (karate) and Murad Ali (badminton).

The athletes participated in challenging games including archery, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, football, cycling, golf, handball, hockey, judo, karate, rowing, rugby, sailing, shooting, squash, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, E-gaming and weightlifting. Games including bodybuilding, boxing, gymnastics, kabaddi, softball, tug of war and wrestling were participated by male athletes only.

The national sports event was graced by the presence of K-P governor President Pakistan Olympic Association Lt. Gen (Retd) Arif Hassan, Secretary Khalid Mehmood, President K-P Olympic Association Syed Aqil Shah, Secretary Sports Kamran Rehman, Director General Sports Asfandyar Khattak, Managing Director Tourism Corporation Junaid Khan, players and a large number of sports enthusiasts. Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa formally inaugurated the sports ceremony. 10,000 athletes from Pakistan Army, Pakistan Navy, Pakistan Air Force, Higher Education Commission, Pakistan Railways, Pakistan WAPDA, Punjab, Sindh, Baluchistan, Pakistan Police, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir participated in the games.

Besides Pakistan Army, Pakistan WAPDA secured second position with 7093 points that included 148 Gold, 99 Silver and 73 Bronze medals followed by Pakistan Railways in the third place with 1815 points coming from 12 Gold, 20 Silver and 73 Bronze medals. Pakistan Navy took fourth position with 1770 points with 21 Gold, 24 Silver and 22 Bronze medals. Pakistan Navy sailors once again ruled the seas, to win the last medal in Team Racing event. After a hard-hitting rivalry Navy team attained the last gold medal, their eighth in total. Punjab topped the provinces by finishing fifth overall with 1622 points and 49 total medals that included one Gold, 14 Silver and 34 Bronze. PAF managed to get 1426 points to finish sixth with 11 Golds, 16 Silver and 31 Bronze medals. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remained at seventh with 1287 points, by grabbing two Gold, five Silver and 34 Bronze medals. HEC with 11 Gold medal, 11 Silver and 38 Bronze medals got eighth position. Sindh finished on the ninth spot with 965 points with two Gold, nine Silver and 34 Bronze medals and Baluchistan completed the top 10 with 495 points coming from one Gold, six Silver and 16 Bronze medals. Islamabad finished 11th followed by Police at 12th place. Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Jammu Kashmir stood 13th and 14th, respectively.

The games costing Rs220 million helped portray a soft image of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in rest of the world.
