CHILD STARS WHO MADE IT BIG IN B-TOWN

Over the years Bollywood has seen some memorable roles played by child stars. These cute little faces added another dimension to the script and complemented the characters. While many of these kids continued to act in movies, some of them chose other professions once they grew up. Here are some of the child stars who made it big in Bollywood.

Darsheel Safary made his debut with the Aamir Khan-starrer Taare Zameen Par. He played the role of a child with dyslexia to perfection and not only did he receive praise in abundance, his role also helped highlight the fact that mental illness is still considered a taboo in the Indian society.

"Tussi ja rahe ho? Tussi na jao." Who can forget the cute little kid from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai who said these lines? These words alone shot Parzan Dastur to fame. Over the years he has appeared and performed well in many Bollywood films.

Urmila Matondkar is best known for her association with the critically acclaimed movie Masoom in 1983. The Rangeela girl, later on, went on to become one of the topmost heroines of her time. She is said to be one of those child stars who truly encashed on their success as a child actor to establish a good career as an adult.

One of the most popular child actors in the 90’s was Kunal Khemu who gave many memorable performances in films during his childhood. The child artiste worked in significantly acclaimed movies such as Zakhm, Raja Hindustani and Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, and earned the same amount of screen space as other protagonists in the flicks despite being much younger.

Harshaali Malhotra made her debut with Salman Khan-starrer Bajrangi Bhaijaan which went on to become a blockbuster film. The girl whose not even 10 yet wowed audiences at home and abroad by playing a girl who can’t speak. Even though this is her only project to-date, she seems to have a bright future ahead of her.

One of the most talented actresses in the present Bollywood crop of former child actors is Shweta Prasad, who is better known for her role in the critically acclaimed 2002 film Makdee for which she won the National Film Award for Best Child Artist. She has also earned huge praise from Bollywood veteran and renowned theatre artiste Shabana Azmi for the kind of life she brings in her acts. Subsequently, Shweta acted in a lot of TV projects and movies like Iqbal.

Little Anjali is all grown up now. Sana Saeed made her acting debut with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. She then went on to act in films like Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega and Badal, and stunned the audience further when she returned to the silver screen, all transformed and in a diva avatar, in Karan Johar's Student Of The Year.

How can we possibly forget the Masoom boy? Jugal Hansraj started his career as a child artiste in the 1983 film which starred Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi. He then went on to star in multiple Bollywood films and is today a National Award-winning director.

The Dangal girls Suhani Bhatnagar and Zaira Wasim got their breakthrough debuts by sharing the screen with Aamir Khan. While the former has previously worked as a model and has featured in various TV commercials and videos, the latter appeared in her second film this year, Secret Superstar, giving another stellar performance.
