ASK A DERMATOLOGIST

My skin is getting pale and is losing its glow. What should I do?

Skin getting pale leads to a diagnosis of anemia. Please get your hemoglobin and iron levels checked. A broad spectrum sun block in the morning is your new best friend plus a vitamin C serum at night to kick start collagen production and help you restore the glow. You can also increase your intake of citrus fruits and apples to counter the paleness. If you really want fresh-looking skin, a good night's sleep is all you need. Early to bed and early to rise makes your skin glow well and bright!

Remedy for dark spots and uneven skin tone?

Dark spots can be due to post inflammatory hyper pigmentation or it can be due to an early melasma. Some people also call freckles dark spots. If your skin is prone to pigmentation, then sun protection is something you cannot skip. Be careful while choosing your products. Alpha arbutin, niacinamide, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (MAP) and liquorice containing products can help. Glutathione is another substance showing promising results in topical, oral as well as injectable forms. You should consult a dermatologist.

Best way to tackle sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin is dry and prone to allergies. It easily turns red after sun exposure and has frequent breakouts. Adequate moisturising and avoiding products containing harsh chemicals which dries the skin and disturbs pH level can help. Always use a moisturising soap. Bathing time should be minimised to 10 to 15 minutes. Luke warm water should be used. In case the symptoms persist, please see a dermatologist.

How to deal with acne and scars on the backside?

Butt acne is different from facial acne. The causes and the treatment are different as well. Avoid tight fitted clothing like jeans and tights, preferably wear lose-fitted pure cotton fabric. Avoid sitting for long hours on leather and foam mattresses. Shower and change quickly after gym. Sitz bath with luke warm saline water may help. The bug involved in this type of folliculitis is staph aureus in most cases. Some cases of MRSA (methicillin resistant staph aureus), a super bug which is resistant to treatment with regular antibiotics, have also been reported. You need to seek medical help if you are prone to have frequent painful large bumps that leave scars.

I love experimenting with my hair with different colours.
Does hair dyeing cause hair loss?

Hair loss after hair dyeing is common due to bleaching. The porosity of the hair shafts is increased when the hair is bleached which leads to weaker hair resulting in more hair loss from breakage, as compared to brown hair dyed in the same tones. I always encourage my patients to experiment with looks. But it's always wise to play safe. Go for darker or same shades to avoid bleaching. Give long gaps between hair dyes lending some repair and recovery time to your hair in between sessions.
