Join us as he talks to us about his musical journey. Excerpts:

Tell us something about yourself that you want the world to know?

I’m an introvert kind of a person and I take my time to open up but sadly, people perceive it as me being an “attitude pot” which is so not true.

You rose to fame from social media, how influential is social media in your opinion?

It’s the only way forward in my opinion honestly. It really is the most powerful tool which can work both ways, make you or break you. Careful management paired with the right mix of ingredients keeping various factors in mind will get you where you eventually want to be. It played its part in my success too and I made hay while the sun shone.

What does music mean to you?

It’s my passion and when passion becomes profession, there isn’t even a day where you are working like a duty has been burdened upon you. You live every moment. That’s what I’m doing, living my dream!

Are you a trained singer or is this a naturally gifted talent?

So, without sounding like a broken record, I would like to reiterate that I am not a professionally trained singer. I am totally a self taught musician but yes, my voice texture and tone is God gifted. Partially, I have inherited it from my father.

Did you imagine that videos of you casually singing will earn you this level of recognition?

Firstly, it’s worth mentioning that I don’t sing casually. My band and I are thorough professionals and we take our jamming sessions very seriously. Yes, the beautiful coincidence of our video breaking the internet took our breath away, but it was destined. I have the self confidence and I knew that my ability and God gifted talent would be recognised by the masses.

Would you credit your success to your YouTube videos?

It was not the “be all, end all” for me. Like I said, social media played its vital role but it was always accompanied by our resilience, hard work and talent. There are literally no shortcuts to success and this phenomenon in everyone’s mind of “becoming successful easily” is something non-existent in my dictionary.

What would you be if not a singer?

I am a software engineer as it stands. If it wasn't music for me then, I definitely would have pursued my career as an engineer.

What genre of music is your personal favourite?

I don't want my fans to associate me with a particular genre, to be honest. My versatility is what makes me different. From low scales to high scales, ghazals to pop or classical to semi classical, I love and sing them all. I’m more into a good melody and promising lyrics as opposed to restricting myself to a genre in particular.

Your experience of collaborating with Momina Mustehsan?

She is undoubtedly, a very talented artist and I was really happy about the collaboration. It was a pleasant experience, I must say and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole process till it lasted.

What do you think has been the best performance of your career so far?

Hyderabad (read Heart-abad) holds a very special place in my heart. To my surprise, every time I’ve performed there, it has been more momentous and memorable to me than before.

Have you ever been nervous to perform in front of a crowd?

I wouldn't say nervous, but have had a few “butterflies in the tummy” moments prior to opening a few shows. I always recite a prayer or two before getting on the stage and hence, I don't really get nervous.

Who is your favourite musician or singer you’d really look up to?

There isn't an exhaustive list really, but a few names: My ultimate inspiration is my dad – yes, he has a brilliant voice and he also sang when he was young. Other than him, I really look up to Atif Aslam, Sonu Nigam and Arijit Singh.

Have you ever faced online trolling?

I’ve never been a victim of online trolling. In fact, I’ve been very fortunate on this front and have received overwhelming love globally.

What piece of advice would you like to give to all the aspiring singers who want to make their careers in this field?

Consistency, patience and hard work are the key components and a lot of practice obviously. They alone can prepare you to achieve absolutely anything in life. Be it music or any other thing in particular.
