The most important step in caring for your skin comes with understanding your specific skin type and how it adapts to certain circumstances or seasonality. MAG speaks to a dermatologist to help you identify. Your skin is your body’s largest organ, as complex and intelligent as your heart, lungs, liver and other vital organs. Using cleansers and treatments that are too harsh, even if they are recommended for excessive oiliness, may send the signal to your skin that more oil is actually needed. Conversely, applying moisturisers that are too thick or heavy can result in decreased natural oil production, resulting in even drier skin. Taking the time to learn your skin’s specific needs will help you to choose the right options that will balance skin resulting in a healthier, more radiant complexion.

The various skin types

There are five main skin types: normal, dry, oily, combination and sensitive. Understanding the different types of skin and which one you have will help get you a better idea of how to treat acne breakouts and achieve a smooth, clear and fresh looking skin.

The most common skin type

Combination skin is the most common skin type. And it is different for every person. You might have an oily T-zone (nose, forehead, and/or chin) but dry skin everywhere else, or you might be dry and sensitive only in certain concentrated spots, around the eyes or mouth.

Knowing your skin type is important

Treating the wrong skin type can lead to irritated skin, breakouts and premature aging. Choosing the correct skin care routine for your skin type is essential for making your skin appear youthful, healthy and the best it can be. A patient's skin type can change over time depending upon numerous factors such as water content, oil content, and sensitivity. Factors that affect these changes include hormones, aging, changes in seasons, and medications. •
