Jeepers Creepers, as a horror creature, is shrouded still in mystery. Even after a prequel that divulges hints to the myth of the character, it never spills out the backstory; it merely tries to build a cult following and promises to divulge more about the creature in future films.

Now after 14 years, Jeepers Creepers has gone down an alley that isn’t easy to come back from. The alley of hackneyed filmmaking and bad production quality – aspects that are best known as the killer of franchises.

In this movie, set between the Jeepers Creepers and Jeepers Creepers 2, the Creeper (Jonathan Breck, reprising his role) has continued to attack the town from the first part. Sergeant Davis Tubbs (Brandon Smith, coming back from the first part) is joined by Sheriff Dan Tashtego (Stan Shaw), who comes armed with knowledge about the Creeper. He was one of the people who had faced the creature in the past, and right now, has the support of a group of vigilantes who had survived him or had their families killed by him.

So they get on the Creeper’s case without a game plan. While the Creeper is more than prepared to handle situations – he has an impenetrable, rusted van, rigged with sharp objects that can keep anyone with psychopathic tendencies happy. To top it off, the traps in the van seem to be supernaturally controlled. There is a harpoon-like spear that shoots out of the muffler of the van at lightning speed, and almost always gets its target.

This rusted van is a well-equipped wing man to the Creeper, with its ricocheting tires, body and glass – I wonder how the Creeper got by before it.

The Creeper comes back after 23 springs (i.e. 23 years), to devour human parts to make himself whole; he then goes off to sleep again till the time comes for another feast.

There are unexplored side story arcs of a crazy granny (Meg Foster) who sees her dead son’s ghost (Jordan Salloum) who was killed by the Creeper, as well as a teenage love angle (Gabrielle Haugh and Chester Rushing), along with an overly hyped and never revealed backstory of the Creeper.

It is a disappointment that Jeepers Creepers has come to this point, where no one expects much from it. The first part was dynamic and original, and truly creepy. Part two was more a slasher/ monster attack/ survival movie, until it gets its act together in the end. This part, besides being a smaller production, is badly paced, edited and shot.

The story, when seen from afar, isn’t bad. What messes it up is bad direction and aimlessness of content. There is also a cameo from Gina Philips, the lead from part one, who leads the film into an eventual fourth part.

Watch it if you are a fan of the original. If you didn’t know anything about the franchise, just watch the first Jeepers Creepers.

VERDICT
