Lips are important this time of year. Dry air and cold temps take a toll, but you can combat the cold easily by following a few simple steps. Here’s a 4-step action plan to take control of dryness, cracks and redness.

1. Exfoliate

It is super simple and fun to do a lip exfoliation. You can go crazy with fun flavours like vanilla or peppermint, but a simple combo of oil and sugar plus a dash of honey will do the trick, too. This honey-sugar lip scrub is a classic recipe. Here’s what you need to do; mix two teaspoons of sugar with one teaspoon each of honey and almond oil. Then use your fingertip to apply the mixture to your lips and gently scrub. Rinse with warm water when you are done.

2. Repair overnight

Follow up the exfoliation with a simple overnight lip repair mask. You can try a collagen-infused mask or make your own. Honey helps your skin retain moisture and vitamin E treats the dry patches. Wear this mixture on your lips overnight and then wipe off any excess in the morning. Prepare it by mixing together one teaspoon each of vitamin E oil (about three vitamin E capsules) and honey.

3. Make your own lip balm

Some long lasting lipsticks will turn your lips very dry; they suck the moisture out of your lips, and when the colour settles into the grooves, it is not a pretty sight. You can make your lip balm at home, as that is very easy. Make one that softens your lips if you are suffering from dryness. Using honey in the lip balm is highly recommended. You can also add a hint of colour to it with raspberry or cranberry.

4. Hydrate from within

Drink plenty of water. The biggest benefit of drinking at least 32 ounces-a-day is that it will keep your lips moist and the rest of the skin hydrated so you will not need to apply heavy-duty products for moisture, so much.
