Be inspired with Inspiron 13 5000

Review

If you’re willing to stretch the budget a little, this Dell Inspiron 13 5000 2-in-1 gets you a lot more than your average affordable laptop. For a start it’s a 2-in-1, with a hinge that lets the screen flip all the way over. And you also get a touch screen. It’s no iPad, but after years of being unconvinced, we actually find laptop touch screens useful sometimes.

This is an all-plastic laptop, but Dell has added enough design quirks to make it seem more than just a generic model. Sharp edges come up against rounded off parts, and it all works together in surprising harmony. There are even some hints of higher-end hardware here too. The keyboard has a backlight and the screen offers 1080p Full HD resolution.

The display’s colours are a wee bit under saturated but then, they are in every single cheaper laptop, and usually more than this. The combination of a glossy finish and low maximum brightness doesn’t help this Dell outdoors, though. You’ll barely see what’s going on if you’re using it in full sunshine.

Real world battery life of around 6.5 hours isn’t going to get most people through a full day’s graft, either. However, thanks to a Core i3 CPU and SSD storage, Windows 10 runs like a dream. This laptop could do with a USB-C port, though. You get traditional USBs and an HDMI slot, fine for now, but two years down the road you might be wishing for an upgrade.
