Turkish-English author Elif Shafak is known for both, non-fictional and fictional writing. She has written in Turkish and English, and has gained immense popularity for her distinctive mix of Western and eastern influences, dark humour, and imaginative elements in her novels. She got her ninth English novel, The Architect's Apprentice, published in 2014, while Forty Rules of Love is one of her most critically acclaimed books. Elif has lived in Turkey, England and the United States of America, which have played an important role in successfully blending diverse themes and ideas into her writing. Elif has been a recipient of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France for her contribution to the field of arts. She has also appeared on The Guardian's shortlist for the 2013 Women's Prize for Fiction list.
