A hot potato

DICTION-IT!

According to the Oxford Dictionary, the phrase translates into a controversial issue or situation which is awkward to deal with. The term dates back to the mid-1800s, and alludes to the only somewhat older expression ‘drop like a hot potato’, which means to abandon something or someone quickly. The idiom hints towards the fact that cooked potatoes retain considerable heat because they contain a lot of water. Weird, isn’t it?
