The best thing since sliced bread

DICTION-IT!

The phrase refers to a good invention or innovation. The phrase loosely originates from an ad of a baking company in a newspaper in 1928. As for the first documented reference to the exact phrase, it is thought to be used during an interview in 1952 where the famous comedian Red Skelton “advised” the Salisbury (Maryland) Times to “not worry about television. It’s the greatest thing since sliced bread.”
