Doing something for a very long time without result, normally associated with talking or arguing a point. As it is used mostly in regards to heated conversations, it is assumed ‘blue in the face‘ refers to the speaker running out of breath. To the point where you have so little oxygen in your system that your face takes on a bluish tinge.
